In Italy women's team sports popular is only volleyball and maybe water polo (a very niche sport). Italians are weak at basketball, handball is practically non-existent there. In football Italy recently lost to South Africa at the World Cup... That's why I have much greater expectations from Italy in this discipline than from Germany or the Netherlands, where volleyball ranks 3/4 in the team hierarchy. All the more so because Italian coaches run teams in half of European countries, where they are more or less successful. I am surprised that: given the popularity of the sport in the country and the good training system, there is a problem with training a lot od decent setters or receivers: at least at the del Core or Picci level.
there are not a lot of "del Core or Picci level" in the whole sport right now it seems to me... in terms of the combination of technical proficiency and physical abilities.
