Great match. Russian men NT playing perfect and up to date modern volleyball. OH who know how to receive, MB who can also attack - to be fair, Volvich and Kurkaev are kinda meh, but Yakovlev is complete MB. Players who doesn't use their height as an excuse for being incapable of digging. Strong serve, fast play, etc.
But that is just the Russian system. What do you want? Nootsara? Players you have are used to this kind of play because this is just their style. Russia plays high balls that's it. Startseva fits into that system well and she had a very good tournament.
Speaking about Voronkova : So if she played good than why are you saying that she will always get blocked and make mistakes? Maybe she just improved her game?
And about Goncha : People have dieffrent personalities. The fact that she doesn't cry after that loss does not mean that she doesn't care. Everyone shows emotions in dieffrent ways. You don't know what's inside her head.
Do you watch men VB as well? Russian NT is a perfectly modern team. Why can't the women team play 2021 VB? They are still playing the nineties. What you say is only partly true. One of the reasons that we play like that is because we don't have setters capable of playing otherwiise. So yeah, she is part of a system, but she is also part of the problem. Plus, she playing the most BASIC and SIMPLE style possible, shouldn't she be at least more precise? Because she isn't. She makes too much errors for someone who is not playing fast paced VB. Also, she should be smarter. Goncharova should never be an option in a tight moment.
My point is, Voronkova greatly overperformed. She played a good tournament. But, deep down, she is not good, so when it is really needed, she will more than likely fail. When you are playiing above your average level in a long and very tough tournament, chances are at one point you will crumble, because it's too hard to be so close to the edge all the time. She is not the worst spiker, but she is no Sokolova, meaning she should be a lot better in reception and defense to be really useful. Brazil and Italy always had these sort of "not great" OH when it comes to attack, but great in the back of the court. So it payed off in the end. Voronkova doesn't have that, so it won't cut. I didn't blame her, though.
It's not about crying...Russians don't even like to show too much emotion in public - it's not about having emotion or not. Russians are very emotional people. It's about showing. So no one will blame her for not crying. That's just silly. But she really doesn't care. She is aloof. If you were Russian you would notice that too. Furthermore, that's not even the main point, which is she is the biggest chocker in Russian sports. She can never deliever when it matters. 1. Startseva is in TOP 3 setters of these Olympics.
2. Voronkova is actually THE best OH of the Olympics ( but people may have dieffrent opinions, top 3 for sure with Garay and Kim )
3. Goncharova played a great game against China and was good against USA too. 2 games that led Russia to a surprising qf because before the Olympics started noone predicted that they are going to make it.
So yes, saying that they suck is a lie.

Matches like this and against turkey are exactly the reason why I have seen maybe half a dozen matches from Russian women NT in the last 5-6 years or so. They are a disgrace and an embarrassment. Biggest chockers out there. The only way they can win sets against any good team is putting a huge lead, so when they choke in the end of it they can still win it. Most often than not they will still choke big leads though. They will never win tight sets, because they can't play under pressure. It has been decades and they can't find women who can make a reception. LOL! What a joke.
As I said, I don't even follow the women NT anymore, so I don't even know what is going on, who is playing, etc. The only reason I decided to watch any match at all is because I love the OG, so I basically watch everything I can. But when I saw that Russia still relled on Ms. Natalia "I can't score an important point for the life of me" Goncharova, it spelt gloom all over. In her over a decade of "representing Russia" she maybe scored a couple important points. Not one more. When Russia had a counter spike for 23-22 in the 4th set I thought to myself "set to Goncharova just for the big laugh". I don't think anyone was surprised with the result...which reminds me, Startseva is still the Russian main setter after all these years LOL! She is as mediocre an unimaginative as always, just older.
The rest of the team is not to be blamed. They are just bad. They suck. Not their fault. Voronkova is just bad. She greatly overperformed, really.
