I even expect simge to return for ECH and be starter. Considering the whole club season, she was the best libero we had in turkey. She said she asked to be excused from VNL because of her mother's health issues but she doesn't know if Santa would invite her for ECH. What do you think Simge Vs Gizem as starting libero?
I think he meant to say that Italy can still be title contender with Antropova, right now Turkey without Vargas and Serbia without Boskovic can’t, that’s a fact. And it has nothing to do with the rest of the squad but with the fact that Italy has elite 2nd OP that could as well be starter while others don’t.
Italy's cheat mode is having two of these dominant opps and using double sub often. If egonu is retiring tomorrow, they won't have the competitive advantage they have now. If Vargas would retire or get injured, turkey still have Ebrar who is also an elite Opp although not at the same level of Vargas. Also there is carutasu who had great VNL last year.
Turkey had a super easy way to the final at world championship last year. Had they faced Brazil or Italy at the quarter or semi finals, we would be talking about a whole different story.
Even the semifinal win against Japan was extremely narrow and lucky.

After the Germany match, Santarelli talked about Vargas' injury and the possibility of resting her. Yet yesterday, with his decisions in the second set, he ended up putting Vargas in a situation where she had to play five sets instead of three.
Turkey is playing the ugliest volleyball among all the teams right now. Almost every player is performing below the level they show at their clubs. The entire game plan seems to be: give the ball to Vargas and hope she scores.
I barely see any real team play. Compare that to what Bregoli has done with Germany. No matter which lineup Germany uses, they still look like a dangerous team, and they don't even have a superstar on Vargas' level.
I've honestly been very disappointed with Santarelli.
Can't disagree more. Vargas get 45 sets in a 5 set game, this is like 30% of the total sets. For an Opp, this is pretty normal. Boskovic, egonu and haak generally get 35-40% of total sets for their team. Also judging this team performance as a general Turkish NT is ridiculous. This team is missing two of their starter MBs who are two of the best middles in the world as well as their offensive OH who would have taken offensive load out of vargas's shoulder if she wasn't injured. Even in first week, Turkey got 2 wins thanks to amazing performance by Yaprak and MBs.
Currently Vargas is in a great shape and obviously she is getting more sets than other attackers as opp but it isnt an extreme load. 30-35% of total sets is normal range for Opp offensive involvement.

The reason behind this perception is the fact that setter is the only position that can't be measured by statistics, which is something common fans (not the ones who have been following volleyball for a long time) base their opinion on players. There are a few stats you would see in fivb tournaments such as running sets or attack kill ratio of whole team but these are far from meaningful.
Setter position is particularly most technical one and it is impossible to praise one player based on one dimension of the game like attacking ratio, blocks or aces etc. That's why it comes down to people's 'eye test', which could be very subjective criteria. For example, one could look down on Cansu's very accurate but high ball setting style while praising Van Aalen's very fast but not precise setting skills. Comparing these two different styles is very hard and different than comparing egonu to Vargas for example.
Comparing past setters with current ones is pointless in my opinion. The volleyball evolved drastically in last two decades. And it isn't about female volleyball mimicking male volleyball. Female volleyball become very popular, which leads to attracting more physical, athletic and taller girls to this sport. And with those physically more gifted players, especially service game and offense improved drastically. I would highly doubt that those very praised ancient era setters would show similar performances with current level of serving pressure.
I've opened a discussion a few months ago to see if there's a consensus among volleyball community here on top4 setters or other positions like we do on opposite position but it seems like that's not the case. Most people have their favourites based on their taste in volleyball and very subjective criteria. Wolosz is getting the most praising because she has the continuity in her career who has competed at highest level for a long time and has a very decorated cv. Similar to Maja, Cansu and Orro. But even among those players there are many complaining about their playing style so I wouldn't take it too seriously when people call them terrible. Users like Madden calls top players as 'terrible' daily 🤦

That certain user is still behind his words. Ebrar proved everyone that she is top4 OH in the world easily after the amazing season she had. Indeed Ebrar&Yaprak Duo showed how great OH duo they are by carrying their team to CL final. Even Derya's club performance showed how an elite OH she is. Both ilkin and Hande aren't at their peak but they have a lot of experience at top level and will be a great 4th OH considering other top NTs' backup OH options.
All in all, there's no other NT (except Russia but they aren't competing anyways) who has currently better OH duo than Ebrar&Yaprak and hopefully we will see that in ECH once Ebrar recovers. Most of Turkish OHs are better than mediocre Lee you have been hyping for whole year anyways

You're right, that's why I said 'to some extent'. That being said, none of Leon, or Vargas, Carutasu, Jack, or Aguero and Costagrande, or Grozer, or Leal, could've changed their federation according to the new regulations, so I still think this is a great step into the right direction with the current rules.
I wonder what could be a legal alteration of current rules preventing the process you're talking about, it's such a tricky matter tbh, and actually quite uncomfortable to discuss since this is a convo about children, basically. In real world, I find these new FIVB rules as harsh as realistically possible on this matter, and a substantial improvement.
You guys are reacting as if these children are being kidnapped to Italy or turkey🤦 certain professions have better job market, better opportunities, more money etc. so it is inevitable that people would move around the world for their best interest. It is nothing different that smart kids going abroad to study in countries with best universities. For example reputable scientist Uğur Şahin (cep and founder of BioNTech) who is born in turkey but at a very young age moved to Germany. He has studied there, get all the Academic training there thanks to the great scientific opportunities Germany provides and now he is one of the greatest and impactful Scientists representing Germany. I don't understand why would anyone have a problem with such naturalization in such a global world. If a person is born in a country who can't provide opportunities to them, scientifically, artistically, or sportive perspective, what is the problem those people moving to countries who value them, invest in them, giving them an environment they can fulfill their ultimate potential and in return they want to represent those countries in either international scientific conferences or Olympic games.
Markova is one of a generation, or even one in a century type of player. It is really pity that such a player can't compete at the International Competition so it makes sense both for turkey and Markova to consider this option which would benefit both parties. By the way, Federation president says they aren't actively trying to naturalize her but the door is open for her and they would be more than pleased if she chooses to play for turkey, which is something any federation president would want honestly.

Emina Jahovic (Sandal), her brother Turkcan who represented Turkey in basketball, many Serbian representatives in athletics- Bibic, Kolasinac, Sinancevic (all Muslims). Many football players, 2nd best Serbian tennis player after Djokovic today- Hamad Medjedovic.
I wanted to give examples cause I saw there was big fuss on social media after Hena said that she comes from a Muslim family with people. To the point where people were confused that she doesn’t wear hijab lmao, and talks about representing Serbia when she has possible Bosniak roots.
The 90s war didn’t affect Sandzak region so it’s still very much multicultural and peaceful. Muslims from the region are kinda more connected with Belgrade and Turkey then with Bosnia which is kinda strange. Religion is much bigger part of the identity there then national.

Adigwe is also from their youth team, and a good chunk of the players of younger generation (like born 2002 and after) both in A1 and A2 are coming through their youth program. Just out of this year senior NT calls Fersino, Adigwe, Eze, Omoruyi, Marchesini, Frosini, Eckl, Battista are coming from their youth team + Manfredini from an affiliate (Anderlini)

From what I know, there are talks about both of these changes (two Euro-Cups and different CL format) ongoing. But like I always mention, the CEV president and Board of Administration (or whatever its name is) are selected mostly by smaller federations, so e.g. any idea for elitist CL formula are unfortunately unrealistic from political standpoint.
That being said, there are several minor changes that should be easy to introduce. For example, I like the concept in football of Europa League (CEV Cup equivalent) winner playing in the CL the next year, and I have no problems with such concept in volleyball as well. League phase in CL instead of group stage - even with let's say two additional legs - would be clearly much more interesting than what we've been receiving in the last 25 years or so. Combining CEV and Challenge Cups with broader group of clubs represented so far in both these events now - is also a logical choice.
Like 20 years ago cev cup equivalent tournament champion was already getting a slot in CL next year right? Or am I remembering something wrong?🫣

To a certain extent, I understand unwillingness of Santa not experimenting young talents because he already has a very young team. Turkish NT doesn't have the pressure for a generation change like many other NT had to in last years because of many retiring from their NTs (like USA, Brazil, China, Japan, Serbia etc. Turkish NT has only Eda who might be retiring soon but even she says she will stay until LA. The rest of the team could easily stay same until 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
