Asian Men's Club Championships move into quarterfinals
Manila, Philippines, April 11, 2014 – Japan's Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler defeated Duc Long Gia Lai of Vietnam 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21), to finish third in Pool B of the preliminaries of the 2014 Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday.
Yuki Hosokawa fired 23 points, including 21 kills and a service ace for the Japanese club, who finally claimed their first victory after three tries.Japan finished their pool competition with a 1-2 win-loss record, while Duc Long Gia Lai settled for fourth place with 0-3 win-loss. Both Duc Long Gia Lai and Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler will be playing in the classification phase.
"It has been three days of intense competition," said Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler’s coach Hiroyuki Furuta. “We played a very good team, and it was a challenge.
"We committed a lot of mistakes, particularly on our reception, that's why we struggled on some parts, but we made adjustments towards the end and recovered easily.”
Powerhouse teams Matin Varamin and Zahraa Al Minaa also previously advanced to the quarterfinals, after posting similar 2-0 win-loss records in the group. Both are slated to face-off for their last preliminary assignment Saturday.
Only six players scored for Duc Long Gia Lai, with skipper Nguyen Huu Ha and Nguyen Van Hanh posting 18 points each, and Cao Xuan Thao and Nguyen Duy Quang finishing with 12 and 10 hits, respectively.
The Japanese side dominated the match in attacks (64-57) and blocks (10-6).
