    Canada - Latvia 3:1 (-24, 23, 20, 19) stats
Gavin Schmitt lead Canada to a 24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19 victory over Latvia on Friday to open the four-country Parnu International Cup men’s volleyball tournament.

The Canadian men’s team, the highest seeds here at 22nd in the world, is currently overseas for training and competition as it prepares for its World League qualifying series against Puerto Rico set for August 20 and 21st in Kingston, Ont., as well as its Olympic qualifying tournament later this year.

"We started slow because we had a tough day of training yesterday,’’ said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag.

"The Latvians put pressure on us with their blocking. We were more aggressive and disciplined with our block-defence and put pressure on them with our serving which enabled us to turn the tide in our favour."

    Estonia - Turkey 0:3 (-26, -27, -29) stats

    Canada - Turkey 3:0 (25, 12, 18 )
Fred Winters of Victoria collected 11 points on Saturday as Canada defeated Turkey 27-25, 25-12, 25-18 at the four-country Parnu International men’s volleyball tournament.

"We started well but we had trouble with our reception in the second part of the first set,’’ said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. ‘’We were able to finish strong and win the set. Our game was well in place in the second and third set, our focus was very good.’’

Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon added nine points for the victors as did Toon Van Lankvelt of River, Man., who earned three of his nine on service aces. Justin Duff of Winnipeg also sparkled with six kills and an ace.

    Estonia - Latvia 1:3 (-23, 23, -21, -20) stats

  • 14.08.11
    Latvia - Turkey 0:3 (-20, -21, -19) stats

    Estonia - Canada 2:3 (-21, -24, 19, 23, -11) stats
Alexandre Gaumont-Casias of Marieville, Que., made an impressive return to the men’s national volleyball team on Sunday as he led Canada to a 25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 15-11 victory over Estonia and first place at the four-country Parnu International Cup.

Gaumont-Casias, who missed the Pan Am Cup and first round of World League qualifying this season due to shoulder surgery this past spring, accounted for 18 points for Canada with 14 kills, two aces and two blocks.

That’s big news for Canadian squad heading into the second and final round World League qualifying series against Puerto Rico August 20-21 in Kingston, Ont.

Gaumont-Casias stepped in for high scoring Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon who was unable to play Sunday due to a neck injury.

‘’ Alex did the job as an opposite,’’ said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. ‘’We needed to win two sets to secure first place. The guys were focused right through because the Estonians served hard all game long.’’

Toon Van Lankvelt of River, Man., added 14 points, Dallas Soonias of Red Deer, Alta., 12, Steve Brinkman of Bowmanville, Ont., and Gord Perrin of Creston, B.C., 11 each and Fred Winters of Victoria eight.

Setter Dustin Schneider of Brandon, Man., was named the tournament MVP

Hoag also inserted some of his younger players such as Perrin and Justin Duff of Winnipeg in the third set.

‘’We struggled with our reception as Estonia played without pressure but we fought all match long,’’ Hoag said. ‘’The fifth set was really good for us as we regained our focus and our block defence was really efficient.’’
