Brazil girls notch sixth straight title at 16th continental championship
BRAZIL 3x1 PERU: 25-27, 25-12, 25-20, 25-19
Lima, Peru September 6, 2008 – Brazil won the Youth South American Championship 2008 for the sixth straight time after an intense final match with Peru finished 3-1. Both Brazil and Peru qualified for the Youth World Championship in Mexico in 2009.
The champions started dominating the “jogo” during the first set, but the Peruvians, showing great power of recovery, equalled the score and then won the set 27-25.
In the next two sets, Brazil, using their players’ height, powerful spike and block, came back at the Peruvians and secured the sets 25-12 and 25-20.
In the fourth set, the hosts, supported by 5,000 people in the Dibos Coliseum in Lima, pushed for the set, but it wasn’t enough. Brazil through second setter Priscila finally closed the set 25-19 for the match.
“Two years ago, the people and their support was the same but the response of the Peruvian team wasn’t the same, they have developed a lot in this time,” said Brazil captain Rosane Maggioni.
For the third place, Venezuela beat Argentina 3-1 (33-31, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23)
