  • Dutch Pairs Delight Followers During Opening Women's Pool
    Play Matches

Stavanger, Norway, June 30, 2010 - Two teams
from the Netherlands will have the opportunity to win their pools after each
Beach Volleyball pair posted unbeaten marks here Wednesday during the opening
rounds of US$600,000 ConocoPhillips Grand Slam on the Vaagen Harbour dockside
    courts.

With Thursday’s schedule featuring the final
16 group matches, the Dutch teams of 14th-seeded Sanne Keizer/Marleen Van Iersel
and 28th-seeded Madelein Meppelink/Marloes Wesselink top Pool C and Pool E,
respectively, with victories in their final matches clinching a “bye” during the
single-elimination phase of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour competition.

Both Dutch pairs will be facing higher-seeded
tandems Thursday with Keizer and Van Iersel challenging third-seeded Maria
Antonelli and Talita Antunes of Brazil with Meppelink and Wesselink playing
21st-seeded Cristine "Saka" Santanna/Andrezza "Rtvelo" Martins of Georgia. The
second match features Main Draw qualifiers as Saka/Rtvelo and
Meppelink/Wesselink posted two wins each Tuesday to advance to the “money”
    rounds.

With victories over pairs from Mexico and
Germany, Keizer and Van Iersel will be playing Antonelli and Talita for the
third-time on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour with the Brazilians winning the first
two matches last season in Seoul and Barcelona. Antonelli and Talita also won
two matches Wednesday with victories over pairs from Germany and
    Mexico.

Meppelink and Wesselink opened play Wednesday
with a 21-15 and 21-15 win in 38 minutes over fifth-seeded Angie Akers and Tyra
Turner of the United States followed by a 21-17 and 21-18 victory in 37 minutes
over 12th-seeded Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti of Italy. With the
Americans in last place in Pool E at 0-2, Cicolari/Menegatti and Saka/Rtvelo are
tied with 1-1 records as the Italians posted a 21-16 and 21-19 win over the
    Georgians earlier Wednesday.

The only team clinching their group Wednesday
was Nicole Branagh and Misty May-Treanor as the seventh-seeded Americans
defeated pairs from the Czech Republic and Australia to secure the Pool G
title. As one of Beach Volleyball’s most decorated players with two Olympic and
three world championship gold medals to her credit, May-Treanor captured the
2008 ConocoPhillips Grand Slam title with Kerri Walsh.

    Top-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva and
Larissa Franca still need a win over 16th-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Ashley Ivy
of the United States Thursday to clinch Pool A outright after defeating teams
from Norway and Germany Wednesday. An American win would cause a three-way tie
in the group at 2-1 with ratios (set and points) head-to-head meetings breaking
    the deadlock.

Three pools have two teams each tied with 2-0
group records led by second-seeded Jen Kessy and April Ross of the United
States, who are tied with 15th-seeded Barbara Hansel and Sara Montagnolli of
Austria in Pool B. Kessy and Ross have won two Stavanger gold medals, including
the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships where the Americans defeated Juliana
    and Larissa for the title.

    Pool D co-leaders are fourth-seeded Sara
Goller/Laura Ludwig of Germany and 13th-seeded Vassiliki Arvaniti/Maria
Tsiartsiani of Greece with the 24th-seeded Nystrom sisters (Emilia and Erika) of
Finland deadlocked with 25th-seeded (25) Ekaterina Khomyakova/Anastasia Vasina
    of Russia.

The third of six “major” tournaments on the
2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour schedule, the ConocoPhillips Grand Slam also
features men’s play where qualifying was staged Wednesday to set the field for
Thursday’s opening Main Draw pool play matches. The women’s semi-final and
medal matches will be played Saturday with the men’s “final four” matches Sunday
as the winning pairs in each gender share the $43,500 first-place prizes.
