Fenerbahce Acibadem 2010-11

  • Captain underlines Fenerbahce confidence

Fenerbahce captain Cigdem Rasna believes the Turkish contenders have the "potential" to win the 2010 FIVB Women's Club World Championship as they prepare to compete in the premier annual club tournament in Doha, Qatar from December 15-21.

This is the first Club World Championship appearance for the Istanbul-based team and if they do finish top of the podium, they will become the first Turkish side to achieve a feat managed only by clubs from Brazil and Italy in the past.

Cigdem said: "I can say that we are in the process of developing our game as a team. We have very experienced players and coaches who raise the prospect of winning the World Cup.

"The championship in Qatar is very important for our team. It is one of our goals this season and we will do our best to finish first by winning all the games. We are very excited to take part in this event and feel very honoured to have been invited."

Fenerbahce qualified for Doha as a wildcard entry after finishing runners-up in the CEV Champions League to Italy's Bergamo, who will also compete at the tournament. Cigdem says Bergamo will not be the only threat to the hopes of Jose Roberto Guimaraes's team, who face Brazil's Sollys Osasco in their opening match on 16 December.

Fenerbahce will also face Thailand's Federbrau in Pool A, and the skipper added: "I expect that we are going to see very high-quality games. I am looking forward to this cup as this is my first visit to Qatar."

  • Fenerbahce crowned Women's Club World champions

Fenerbahce of Turkey were on top of the world this afternoon after Brazilian coach Zé Roberto's women scored a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) win over South American champions Sollys Osasco of Brazil to claim the 2010 FIVB Women's Club World Championship as it concluded for the first time in 16 years in Doha, Qatar.

FIVB re-introduced the Women’s Club World Championship after a long break, with the last edition being held back in 1994 in São Paulo. Fenerbahce is the second European team in history to claim this trophy after the Italians of Messaggero Ravenna topped the charts in 1992, and the Turks did so without losing a set throughout the tournament. Although the match finished in straight sets, the action on court was superb and Fenerbahce did not simply cruise past their South American rivals. Once again Katarzyna Skowronska was the most prolific scorer with a total of 15 points, supported by Sokolova with 14.

Fenerbahce was definitely the pre-favorites for this final game especially taking into account that the Turks had outclassed the South American champions in the prelims. However, after defeating Bergamo in yesterday’s semifinal, captain Carolina had announced that she wanted the side to go for a similar performance with the cup at stake and hence the clash was set up to be a thrilling ride.

The Al-Gharafa sports hall was packed with around 2,000 fans that had arrived from Istanbul to support their heroines in the quest for a first major international trophy after finishing second in the last edition of the CEV Champions League. With their yellow-blue flags, loud choirs and the regular refrain “Türkiye”, they brought the kind of ambiance that a final game fully deserved to have in Doha.

The girls rallied around 40-year old setter Fofão – who was playing against many former team mates of the Brazilian national team - as she immediately set the pace of the game at 8-5 but Osasco drew even at 13-all, profiting from some shakes that affected the Turkish receivers. This state of equality did not last for long however as Fenerbahce grabbed a 4-0 mini-break and that was eventually the deciding factor in the first set. A very long and beautiful rally featuring excellent defenses was finished with a pipe of Kasia Skowronska for 22-17 but Osasco was mentally strong enough to claw back and reduce the gap to just one point at 24-23. However, that attempt was in vain as Skowronska found the right tempo and power to kill a splendid attack and pocket set one for her side.

The score stayed close at the opening of the second set as the tension remained incredibly high. Fenerbahce and Osasco were both attacking with excellent efficiency and after leading 16-14 at the second mandatory stop, the Turks widened the gap with an ace from Fofão and another splendid spike from Skowronska to take the scores to 20-17. Brazilian coach Moura decided to briefly substitute captain Carolina with his younger setter, Ana Tiemi Takagui as they continued to trail and the change almost proved to be a good move. However, a couple of errors from the serving zone paved the way for Fenerbahce as they picked up a 25-22 win.

Osasco was not ready to submit however and went up 8-4 at the first technical break in the third after an attack from Jaqueline initially considered out by the first referee was assigned to the Brazilians after a consultation with second referee Susana Rodriguez. Without making a substitution, Zé Roberto was able to get back command of operations as his players impressed with their consistency in attack from every area of the court and with 16-13 being stamped on the scoreboard at the second technical time-out, Fenerbahce rapidly went on to record the biggest success in the history of Turkish Volleyball, clinching the set 25-17 and with that, the title.

  • We expect the supporters attend this match

Fenerbahce Acibadem women’s volleyball team will fight Croatian Zok Split in Group B match scheduled on January 6th, 2011 Thursday.

Meeting is in Burhan Felek Volleyball Venue in which starting time is 20.00. TRT Turk will broadcast the game live.

Fenerbahce Acibadem women’s volleyball team manager Violet Duca commented about this game: “Zok Split is seemed to be the weakest team in this pool. But we believe there is no weak team and you have to fight full power against any opponent. Trainings are so heavy nowadays, we played 2 matches against Vakifbank Gunes Sigorta after having the title at Qatar. We tried to beat them twice, nevertheless they are one of the best teams of the country. What we have to focus on is Turkish League and Cup now. We will play often matches and we must think seriously about those struggles. After playing Zok Split, we will face to Bergamo in Champions League. Both matches are very important and we trust our team. I believe we will be on top at the end these matches. Supporters are the biggest power and they will always be with us either we win or not. They can also make our team win a match by motivating the players. We want them on tribunes for this game too.”

Fenerbahce Acibadem captain Cigdem Can Rasna expressed her feelings about the match, “We defeated Zok Split away in the first match. Here is another chance to continue victory series at home. Great supporters will keep walking with us, their support is so essential for our team. One of the most important factors of our achievements is the support of spectators.”
