I don't like Kuzyutkin's point of view. Russia is not just Sokolova, Godina, Gamova and Estes. In Beijing all four played and Russia failed anyways. Instead of trying to keep the old players as long as possible he should try to make the young ones become better. Kosheleva and Goncharova definitely have the potential to be real big stars soon, but not if they have to spend more time on bench because the "stars" have to play. Some years ago Sokolova was the best player of the world, but I don't think she still is in that shape.
I really liked the Russian team from 1st set yesterday, if you replace Fateeva with Gamova and use Kabeshova as libero it would be a great team. Goncharova was unstoppable, Kosheleva also played very well, and both are improving in reception, but still have a long way to go. I also hope Belikova and Perepelkina will get more chances, even though they are not so young anymore I think they are among the best Russian MBs.
Gamova is still the best. Goncharova has great potentials, but she needs more experience since she never played for the NT. I do think that both Kosheleva and Goncharova can grow into more versatile players than Gamova, considering both of them can receive serves, but both need a lot of work in this area.
Estes will not play on NT anymore. Looks Godina would not play too. The reasons are different though.
Sokolova, if she is healthy, is a big asset because she can do a lot of thing on the high level. But the most important thing she adds to the equation is her experience. Especially now, when Safronova would not be able to play for sure.
Perepelkina might has some problem because she started playing volleyball in Kazakhstan. It is important to know if she is a naturalized or a Russian player. But she is on the Kuzyutkin's list anyway.
Belikova made a right decision last year when she left Uralochka. She got much more time as starter in Avtodor and Omsk. With more playing time and exposure she is doing great. She expressed desire to play for the NT, and I do think that she fully deserved that. But it is not for to decide. I really hope Kuzyutkin would invite her.
Overall, with two veterans Gamova and Sokolova, and several young and ambitions players, Russian team has very good potentials. A lot depends on qualified coaching (which is my greatest concern so far). And of course the girls have to work hard and learn fast.
