Brazil star forward Damiris Dantas has been named the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women in Puerto Montt, Chile.
Dantas averaged tournament bests of 20.9 points and 12.6 rebounds per game to lead Brazil to the bronze medal, her country’s first medal at the U19 world Championship.
She saved her best for last by going for 26 points and 13 rebounds in the bronze medal game win over Australia. It was her fifth game of the tournament of 20 or more points and the same number with double figures in rebounding.
The 192cm forward was joined in the All-Tournament Team by Rui Machida of Japan, Ariel Massengale and Breanna Stewart of the USA, and Senegalese-born centre Astou Ndour, who represented Spain.
Machida was the crowd favourite at the tournament. Standing just 160cm, she led the surprising Japanese team to seventh place by averaging 12.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game, ranking her first in the tournament in assists. She compiled 22 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists against Australia in the Quarter-Final.
Massengale was superb in the USA’s Semi-Final and Final wins, averaging 10 points and 8 assists in the medal round. Overall she averaged 7.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game and was the spark plug for the USA offence which led the tournament in scoring.
Stewart dominated the keyways in Puerto Montt, blocking 1.7 shots per game to rank second in the tournament. She also averaged 11.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in less than 20 minutes per contest, and was dominant in the USA’s tight Quarter-Final win over France with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Ndour was one of the big improvers of the tournament, averaging 14.8 points and 10 rebounds per game in Spain’s last five matches. Overall the 193cm centre averaged 12.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game, and had her best game in the Quarter-Final win over Canada with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
