sitenoise do you have a list (or a link) of the girls that made the recent wide roster with Aratani? was Kubota part of it? I missed the whole thing... I'm gonna try and catch up

I'm conflicted over Irasawa. "not quite as alert or quick" is accurate.
She was very good in 18–19, not quite alert or quick, but ... check these stats (she's ranking it in kill %, blocks, and serve). She seemed like she didn't even play in 19-20. I noticed her only a couple times and thought she looked good/better. She's not bodied up right. Maybe she'll grow into that 188.
This why I'm hopeful for SAGA's Araki. She's 184, filled out and solid. Runs around like she's 174. She can't jump, though. And she's not scary at all
She is dependable but her delayed reaction is the problem, her sense of timing. She gets confused when things accelerate or just plain late reaction which is even worse. There's a lot of hesitation also on whether she should go for the attack or just block.
You're talking about Ayaka Araki right? I should look into her.

A friend says she's a fan of Haruka Miyashita and a reason she played volleyball too, she posted in her twitter in the past but deleted it already
Hope we get to see some of their interactions
That makes it a lot more interesting. I bet she's happy that typo happened.
I'm looking forward to future interactions. Yamashita is small and cute like Denso's Airi Tahara and Tahara said Miyashita attracts a lot of rookies, herself included

If Irisawa is hope then Japan is doomed. She's not quite as alert or quick. Akutagawa has more presence and range, a lot more aggressive, and faster and lighter on her feet.
Oikawa is also one to watch for sure for the same reason as Akutagawa
-
Did she change it? LOL or I wonder where I copied it from originally I don't ever type Japanese names. I admire your ability to see something like that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Let's see, so volleybox, my own site. I guess that's it. I don't have kanji names here anywhere, do I?
[[EDIT]] Is "Ruriko" correct? That's a tough one. It's hard for me to say. Now that I think about this girl, I also got her age and schooling wrong. It's hard with school players. I remember assuming that "Fukui High School, Fukui Institute of Technology" were two different schools and if she went to Fukui Institute of Technology she must have been 22–23 years old when she joined Hitachi. Then I noticed she has this helpful tip: a birthday. Poor girl. I like her. There's a couple Ruriko posts around here
Yeah it's her.
I wish I could read Japanese but nah I was going through Hitachi's matches and there was this girl who kept missing Sato's ball which Kubota ends up receiving and either passes to her or Osanai. She works well with Kubota but missed maybe 3 or so of Sato's ball. It was painful to watch lmao. I went through the list of names under Hitachi but nothing came up when I tried searching 上坂璃子 on youtube so I went back to the hashtag on twitter and copied it
-
sitenoise you should proly change Uesaka's kanji name from 上坂璃子 to 上坂瑠子
Amusing that there's a setter called Haruka Yamashita in PFU, V.League misprinted her name as Miyashita in their new photobook The Rally. She should probably just use Haruka. I don't know if she's any good, I can't find any focus videos of her in action

No player only able to give their 50% should be allowed to participate and Miyu is no exception.
Her, Iwasaka and Shinnabe's roles at Hisamitsu needs to be re-evaluated. Both Iwasaka and Miyu mention Shinnabe's retirement has affected their plans but why exactly would they allow Miyu who is clearly still in recovery mode and may not even ever be out of that stage to play for the NT.
Expectations seem to have dwindled after Risa retired and the lack of Miyashita is also making a lot of volleyfans annoyed.
I think I saw on twitter that holding the remote match thing was a mistake seemingly due to Korean netizens saying NT current roster has devolved significantly (uhh thanks Asahi Sports that's exactly what they needed)
-
A little update on Japan's 3 key players as mediaplayed by Nakada. The lack of their chosen setter is disappointing
Miyu still sticking with her 50% forced autospeech. I was really looking forward to her comeback but again there's plenty of empty phrases here and at this point it would probably be better if she retires already.
Here's Mayu and Kurogo talking about getting stronger. Kurogo talking about Mayu and Mayu being eager

Miyashita was before my time so I don't know what her story was. She went to Osaka International Takii High School 2006-2008. They won Silver in 04 and 05, but didn't make the top four while Haruka was there. Info in English is tough to come by.
Osaka International HS is where Okayama Seagulls get many of their players. There was a user here Ryu Takamiya who pointed out that certain teams align with certain High Schools for young players. It's unclear to me whether this is some kind of mafia thing or what but besides Okayama/Osaka, Hisamitsu seems to have first dibs on Higashi Kyushu Ryukoku (my team*) and Toray Arrows get Shimokitazawa Seitoku. The other powerhouse HS, Kinrankai, seems slightly less tethered to JT Marvelous.
Watching those 2017 U20 matches above ... I notice that the HS team that wins the Championship (in January) seems to form the core of the subsequent U20 Squad (in June-ish). In 2017 it was Shimokitazawa (Kurogo, Horie, Yamaguchi, Iwasawa (L); 2019 was Kinrankai (YOLO (OP), Nakagawa (S), Nishikawa (OH), Mizusugi (L), Miyabe (OH). I don't know how far back that kind of thing goes.
If you're interested I'm trying to gather some HS infos over at volleybox, here. Again, English info is tough. It's almost impossible to even know the names of most of the players except the famous ones.
The High School videos --final round, anyway-- are hosted here. Unfortunately, they just blow away the previous year when the current one rolls around. I can't remember how I've found older ones, but I did bookmark Hayashi's Kinrankai win over Higashi. It's here, so the videos are still there but without any references to them that I can find. I think they've only been doing it for a few years though.
That 2018 Kinrankai win over Higashi pales in comparison to 2019's Kinrankai win over them. It was an off-the-charts Tie Breaker. Also, the 2019 Higashi 3–2 Semifinal win over Ishikawa's Shimokitazawa HS was awesome. I can't immediately find those videos online (I downloaded them, though) but I think you can get to 2019's round using Wayback Machine. It bummed me out immensely that after the Higashi win over Shimokitazawa, instead of showing the joyful winning faces of my Higashi team the cameras lived on Ishikawa's crying, loser face because she's someone's sister. That's why Mayu and I started off on bad terms. I've come around though, and admire what she's doing now.
As for the 2020 Championship, the Final was a dud even though it was my team, Higashi, that won. The Semifinal matches are the ones to watch. Higashi booted Kinrankai there, and sadly Kyoei Gakuen lost 2–3 to Furukawa Gakuen. A Final between Higashi and Kyoei would have been one for the history books. Kyoei was anchored by a couple Beach volleyball players, had a tall Chinese MB, and one of these Kawaii OHs--who's actually pretty good. I really liked them.
[Edit] Here's 2019 Final , Here's the SF with Mayu's loser face. The videos take a while to load so be patient. If you use Wayback machine, don't even try to play the videos via Wayback, instead copy the URL and lop off the Wayback part. As in:
http://web.archive.org/web/201…//sportsbull.jp/p/457108/ ... copy that and then just copy the Sportbull part <https://sportsbull.jp/p/457108> and paste it into a new window or TAB
Having said all this (because I love to say all this ), you should also just check out some of last season's JT matches for Hayashi love, and Saitama's for an intro to Yoshino. I'm not sure if VTV is still free to watch
[Edit 2] FujiTV also has the last couple years HS Champ videos
Damn once I started I couldn't stop. I'm still in the middle of watching vids on youtube. When I searched a few names there's weirdly A LOT more content on bilibili than on youtube.

Phoenix since I love eating crow I'll share this about #27 Kotona Hayashi. She signed with JT Marvelous in February of 2018 and essentially took over the Final Round through the Gold Medal match. She didn't do very well but she knocked the Yuka's (Kitsui and Kanasugi) to the bench. I was all WTF? Who is this teenager? This is nonsense. JT has a shot at the Title and WTF? What are you doing?!
Turns out, a month prior to joining JT, Hayashi had won MVP, Best Receiver, and the High School Championship with Kinrankai (grrrr). So I checked into this kid's stuff. brahmin had warned me High School volleyball in Japan is a big thing. He's right. It's amazing. He and theloneracer showed me where I could watch matches and I'm all
It's been great fun having at least some idea of who these kids are who come into the League, and/or win the U20 World Championship
Interesting. I'm definitely gonna check her out. Where can I watch those high school matches? Was that why Miyashita had like 11 documentaries made about her when she was like 10 or something.
-
I made that comment to go with the photo since it wasn't included. I have no idea what happened there and I doubt any of us here do unless we see the full remote match which is not possible. I wouldn't be surprised if the biggest factor was Miyu but I'm only going by what I've seen from her before, I don't know the extent of her power anymore. Also, it's a solo shot which could be a hint
Miyu is still in recovery mode and even if I want to believe that it's her doing I'm already under the impression that she doesn't really want to play anymore.
I don't know if anyone else remembers when Koga came in, Miyu was already dreading having to play with the younger ones. It was like a competition of who can score more between her and Koga years ago

I read this blogger's rundown (which is a tough google-translate) but here's the recap:
Their bio states: "Information about the All Japan Women's Volleyball Team will be posted with dogmatism and prejudice".
I've noticed we share some of the same opinions
---------------------------
Is this the same photographer who bet Ranna Shiraiwa was going to NEC?
Who exactly is Yoshino? I should probably check her out. Is this the #27 girl? the ones I follow on twitter were buzzing about her. Also the setter I'm least impressed by seem to have done well too.
-
Not a good sign. Even if say, Nagaoka did school the sht out of them that's still really troubling. They already beefed up the Blue team and wouldn't even separate AiMayu which means their dynamic is really not working.
-
Yoshino Yuri from Ageo Medics (OH, 20/ 173cm.)
Do you know who won?

You can't really compare Aratani to Nabeya. Nabeya at Aratani's age was plain mess. Of course there was a transition from plain mess to somehow a useful chaos from Nabeya. Aratani definitely has more control over her attacks and she has a smoother swing than Nabeya. Kubota from Hitachi is probably closer to Nabeya than Aratani. Aratani knows she's good, there's a level of confidence from her that's palpable and you can see during NEC's matches that Koga can't even keep up sometimes but Aratani is far more reliable on the court.
I know I sound like a huge fan right now LOL but I have high hopes for her. Perhaps her skillset isn't what's necessary for NT right now but perhaps in the near future when they realize what it is their team is exactly lacking which is a lot let's be real.
I see your point. I take back what I said about her being a Nabeya starter pack and I agree that she does have a far cleaner attack.
I'm assuming they didn't call her in since they have no idea how to utilize Koga which is basically the same as her in terms of what she can bring to any team.
-
Reading these Nakada interviews I'm getting the sense she wants to speed up their game and incorporate more back attack. I'm all for that in theory but if it's Kurogo and Ishikawa at the top of the food chain I fear disaster. They are both high ball hitters. Apparently that was the Shimokitazawa Seitoku way. Ishikawa swings harder at out of system balls than quick sets. The timing is hers and that's what she likes. Quick sets close to the net for her are a block waiting to happen. Give her a high ball a meter or two back and she's good to go.
Kurogo and Ishikawa playing together this past season was awkward. And it was with Nakada NT setter, Nanami Seki. Kurogo missed the first round or two with an injury, though
Kurogo and Mayu are a power clash duo. It's not a particularly harmonious dynamic that worsens with the overly predictable Seki.

Shiori made the wide roster last year but never got called and didn't make it this year. What's weird is that she's signed with Himeji as a Middle Blocker. We'll see how that goes. NEC did do a little better toward the end of last season when Shiori was playing MB but there are other reasons for their improvement as well.
I don't think Shiori will ever make the NT as a middle-blocker. She could be one of these amorphous MB/OP hybrids like YOLO and Shion Hirayama. That would be cool. They just need a coach who will utilize it.
Yeah Ishii is a great player IMO but not a leader at all. She was Hisamitsu captain last season LOL. She needs to be a bench player on the NT. Not because she's bad but because Japan needs to be better than her if they want to win.
Mayu Ishikawa (also imo only) is very smart and is the most aggressive player Japan has, but she's short (173cm), and Japan NT doesn't really go for "aggressive". The first rule of Japan NT is "No Errors". She makes errors from time to time and her reception needs to adapt and improve a lot. But I do think she is going to be a big factor in NT's future
I don't doubt Shiori's potential, she seems more like a sloppy but less chaotic Nabeya in her current state. She does score like crazy but I mean NT already has Koga for that reckless scoring. But I do see what Shiori is capable of, strong attacks that are still in its raw stage. A hybrid would definitely suit her once she polishes her style.
