The 2013 NCAA Championship - USA

The 2013 Men's Collegiate Volleyball Season will begin this week in the USA.

Tillie came on briefly as a substitute in 1 set and only had 1 attack, no kills or errors.

Looks like California is the only state where guys play volleyball. Weird.

Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, Hawaii and California have volleyball as a high school sport for boys.

On the college level, there are only a few schools that have teams because men's volleyball is a low-revenue sport compared to American football. Plus, with the number of male athletes required for American football, you have to have a lot of women's sports to make up the difference with Title IX laws.

With so few schools playing, there are few conferences. So if a school wanted to start a team, you do not have many choices. Cal Baptist was playing at a lower level and decided to move up for men's volleyball. Even MIVA got another school Lindenwood, this year to move up a level to play.

Main thing is that the Head Coach, John Speraw, who was there for 10 years, was hired by UCLA to replace Al Scates after Scates coaches 50 years at UCLA. Higher paying position and trying to bring the school back its first title since 2006 (Their 19th)

Irvine lost 5 seniors as well. Only 3 players hometown's are outside of California on this year's squad (Tillie included).

The BYU-Irvine match was on TV on Friday (as was the USC-Stanford) and they mentioned that the senior setter for Irvine, Chris Austin did not make the trip to BYU because he was coaching a club team in a tournament. I was surprised by this statement, as probably most would, because you are an student/athlete and then your coaching on top of that. Should not your teammates be your first priority and why are you coaching a club during your playing season?
