It seems like the Puerto Rican league is a first step for US-players from the NCAA to gain some international experience. I think, their league also starts a bit late, so that the NCAA players can play NCAA and afterwards the Puerto Rican league, or am I wrong ?

Traditionally, the Puerto Rican League has served as the first step for American players interested in continuing in professional volleyball. Many top players have started their career or had stints in Puerto Rico (Hooker, Hodge, Larson, Willoughby, Thompson, Fawcett, Tamas). The NCAA Championships are held in December and most athletes also graduate that same month. The benefits of the league are the pay, which is generally good considering the short season, the timing of the league, which start in January where as almost all other leagues are already half way in, and the proximity to the US. The negatives would be the level of the league is not fantastic outside of the top teams. Many of the Puerto Rican athletes are not full-time professional players and have day time jobs and/or studies that they have to attend to. The structure of the practices are generally just in the evening hours which gives the "foreigners" a lot of free time on their hands. Overall, I think it's a great place for Americans contemplating a professional volleyball career to get a chance to see if they are really interested. Very little commitment in terms of time and Puerto Rico is culturally different enough but still close to home that they can get a feel for what it would be like if they choose to move to another country for the following season.

AVCA (US NCAA) National Player of the Year Alaina Bergsma signs with Criollas de Caguas

Kim Willoughby arrived to Puerto Rico. You should read her twitter. The way she's reporting how she's spending her day is hilarious

The franchise is moving cities to Humacao.
It looks like Carolina moved to Humacao and then Toa Baja moved to Carolina.
There are new Gigantes de Carolina and Orientales de Humacao.
No more Llaneras de Toa Baja. So sad.
-
Its been a nice surprise to me to see Stacy Gordon.
-
Does anyone know where is Xaimara Colon? She was supposed to play for Orientales de Humacao, but I watched the stats and she didn't play until now...
She is one the best liberos in the league....
