Olympic Games - 2012 London (qualification process)

    Le coup d'envoi du tournoi de volley-ball (messieurs) qualificatif aux Jeux olympiques 2012 de Londres, prévu initialement le 12 janvier à Yaoundé au Cameroun, a été repoussé au 16 du même mois, a annoncé mercredi la Confédération africaine de volley-ball (CAVB).
    L'instance africaine a procédé à ce changement pour des raisons d'ordre organisationnel, précise la même source. Sept sélections africaines dont l'Algérie ont confirmé leur participation à ce rendez-vous, il s'agit du Cameroun (pays hôte), la Tunisie, l'Egypte, la RD Congo, le Rwanda et le Nigeria, alors que le Gabon a décidé de se retirer. Le tirage au sort pour l'établissement du calendrier général des rencontres quotidiennes se fera lors de la réunion technique prévue dimanche prochain.
    Le tournoi se jouera sous forme de championnat. Le premier au classement se qualifiera aux JO-2012.

    Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournaments: (Japan, Italy and Germany)


    The participating teams for the joint Men’s World Olympic Qualification and Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament to be held in Japan will be as follows:
    • 1 host team (Japan)
    • 4 teams from Asia (not qualified for the Olympic Games)
    • 3 non-Asian teams being the highest ranked teams not-qualified for the Olympic Games (as of January 5, 2012 or following the completion of all Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments, whichever is later) as per drawing of lots distribution.


    Italy (Rome) and Germany (Berlin) tournaments:
    Vacancies for the Men World Olympic Qualification Tournament:
    • 2 host countries
    • 6 other teams
    • The nine additional teams will be split as per the following: 3 Europe, 2 Asia, 2 NORCECA, 1 South America, 1 Africa.


    For Japan the eight participating teams are:
    • Japan (host country)
    • Iran (2011 Asia Championship best team after hosts Japan)
    • China (2011 Asia Championship second best team after Japan and Iran)
    • Korea (2011 Asia Championship third best team after Japan, Iran and China)
    • Australia (2011 Asia Championship fourth best team after Japan, Iran, China and Korea)
    • CEV1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012) ?1st draw

    For Germany the four participating teams are:

    Egypt sent its best team to low level Pan Arab Games right after the World Cup. that was a big mistake and now they are paying the price.


    I believe Tunisia probably will lose to Cameroon ! even Algeria has a chance to beat Tunisia. so Egypt is still alive.

    Hosts Cameroon opened their African Olympic Qualification campaign with victory over Ghana

    Yaoundé, Cameroon, January 18, 2012 - African Championship bronze medalists Tunisia pulled off a stunning victory against Egypt on the opening day of the Men’s African Olympic Qualification tournament in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Tuesday, clinching a 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 29-27, 25-23) over the African champions.


    In the day's other match, hosts Cameroon impressed the home crowd with a straight sets (25-28, 25-16, 25-12) victory over Ghana to make their ambitions clear.


    The competition sees five teams competing for a slot at the London 2012 Olympic Games with the competition running until January 21.


    Tunisia v Egypt 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 29-27, 25-23)


    Tunisian outside hitter Marouen Garci led his team in a memorable victory over Egypt and was named best scorer with 18 points, while Saleh Fathy scored 16 for Egypt.


    Egyptian big gun Ahmed Salah, best spiker at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup, was held out for much of the match through a stellar blocking effort from their North African rivals.

    Cameroon v Ghana 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-12)


    Opposite Jean Ndaki used his unstoppable razor sharp hits to clinch a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-12) win over a determined Ghana in 64 minutes. Ndaki scored 12 points to lead the match scorers, while Seido Ajanako led Ghana with eight.


    The second day of action will see Cameroon and Algeria face off in a repeat of their semifinal match at the 2011 African Nations Championship in Morocco when Cameroon thrillingly won the encounter 3-2. Egypt take on Ghana seeking their first victory.
