2014 CEV DenizBank Champions League

  • He scored very little breakpoints, but I wouldn't formulate this as bad spiking, moreso as bad mentality.

  • This didn't surprise me at all :P He wanted to show his best in front of a Russian team. He had the exact same reaction during our first interational friendly this season, after all the criticism had hit him. Besides, he's clearly much happier in Italy.

I think there is less pressure on him as nobody expects him to be a leader anymore like they did in Russia. On the other hand, Kurek has no right to screw up now.
Kurek was pretty superb in Russian play-outs earlier this year, just unstoppable and receiving very well. The trouble was obviously that by that time "the train was gone", I mean Cherednik was fired and Bartosz was transparently shown where to go :).

I don't think he wanted to stay in the first place. The environment wasn't right, supposedly he wouldn't even go out and socialise. You know, he's our big baby and needs proper care and handle in order to shine :P (and I'm only half-joking here). I'm pretty sure he was relieved when they told him he can go. He can handle the pressure, deals with it quite well while in the NT (and here in Poland it's incomparable with any other place in the world).

It's generally hard to be a volleyball celebrity in a city like Moscow although who knows what was on his mind. But I understand Dinamo's logic too as they expected to sign an analogue of Dante or Kaziyski. Kurek is highly dependent on his condition and the injury he had together with generally good Superleague blocking made him literally invisible. Things could have been different, had Poltavskiy and Veres been fit to play but as it was Kurek remained the main target for the critics and tough servers and eventually lost his place in the starting six to a teenager Schadilov.

I think that Poland is overall very comfortable place for volleyballers as the pressure is literally absent when compared with places like Russia or Brazil. Both countries are packed with superb players and serious coaches so appearing in a yoghurt ad may easily cost a place in the NT (the sole exception being, perhaps, Muserskiy). Poland has serious volleyball audience and lots of media attention but not many talented players so people like Kurek are very safe.

Ah, you know nothing then. At least when it comes to our internationals, who are under constant media scrutiny.

See, that's the difference. In Poland volleyball has become a product and just like in football the players play a huge part in marketing. Bartman does not advertise beer purely for fun, just like Piotrek Nowakowski wasn't the one to choose to appear on gas station billboards. We don't have people who would be willing to just splash cash around. It's a business that has to pay off commercially.

Well, at least Russia craps talent. I really, really tried to ignore some of your patronising remarks but I just can't anymore.

    Anyways, :offtopic:

  • Ah, you know nothing then. At least when it comes to our internationals, who are under constant media scrutiny.

This "scrutiny" remains a meaningles internal affair unless it materialises into actions. The team had completely failed the main international competition - OG - nobody's got sacked, all stayed the same, everybody is feeling sorry for "chlopaky" (or how you call them?).

I agree that volleyball has a little chance of getting such a commercial spin in Russia but there are two important moments here. Firstly, there are natural reasons for that as ice hockey, football, and basketball grab tremendous amounts of attention. Secondly, every serious team in Polish top league has a sponsor who pays player's wages - i.e. there are, in fact, people "willing to splash cash around". There is no way one can balance the budget from tickets/accessories sales and TV broadcasts in volleyball, and when the sponsor leaves the club, no yoghurts/beer/etc will help to stay afloat. Polish volleyballers are therefore not dying of hunger, they are essentially cashing their popularity, this is pretty much it. In this way, they remind me players of Russian football NT: the lack of achievement is outweighted by the parochialism of (predominantly, right-wing) fans, so the cash from the ads keeps flowing into the pockets of the regional superstars.

You can be rude as much as you like, this won't change the facts. There are not that many truly talented countries as for volleyball: definitely Cuba, then Russia, Brazil, U.S.A., Serbia, possibly Italy. The Polish team always features same faces; only haircuts and accessories change in this modelling agency. At the same time, two OHs are under 190, another two OHs are trying to play opposite, there is only one MB who can attack - I'm afraid those are not the signs of a talent overflow. Yes, there are Kurek, Winiarski, Zygadlo, Nowakowski but do they have people behind them fighting for their spot? Next, take a look at the best players in Polish top league, how many of those can make the NT stronger? One, maybe two, the rest are foreigners. Lastly, look at the results of the youth competitions, U'19/U'21/U'23. Polish volleyball is unwell, which is obviously the fault of "patronising crap" from Russia, make no mistake here.

The decision to keep Anastasi was a consequence of heavy criticism our federation received after sacking Castellani. Many considered that rash and unnecessary. And the latest example of such scrutiny would be Bartman, who has become an enemy of the state after the Olympics and was basically forced out of the NT by the media.

Secondly, every serious team in Polish top league has a sponsor who pays player's wages - i.e. there are, in fact, people "willing to splash cash around".

I'm not talking about particular clubs, but national volleyball as a whole. Our federation, NT and domestic leagues are supported and financed by a private TV station, which by the way is the main organizer, sponsor and promoter for the upcoming WCH. While Euro 2012 was heavily funded by the government and UEFA, these championships, despite requiring much, much smaller amounts of money, have to this day received a total of zero support from the ministry of sports. It doesn't suprise nor bother me that players' images are being used. If it helps the cash flow, then so be it. I wouldn't want our volleyball to go back to the state it was in, let's say, 10 years ago.

One last thing - there's a difference between pure talent and a finished product, ready to compete on highest level. There are some holes in training, as well as problems with properly guiding players through the transition period and that's the main issue of volleyball in Poland, not lack of talent.

The rest I'm gonna ignore. Or maybe I'll just write down the "modelling agency" stuff somewhere, so I can make proper use of it when the time comes.

That's all from me here, sorry for the off topic.
