  • Second round surprises
Kentucky losing on their home court to Ohio State.
BYU beating Arizona on their home court. These teams were about even in the coaches poll and RPI rankings (strength of victory and schedule), but BYU did not receive a seed and had to travel to advance.
Oregon State beating UALR. UALR had 4 match points in the 4th and 4 more in the 5th set, but the Beavers kept fighting to advance. Beavers have played 7 5-set matches and are 6-1.
5 teams from the Pac-12 advanced to the Third Round
5 teams from the Big Ten advanced to the Third Round
2 from the ACC, 1 each from the Big XII (Twelve), Mountain West, SEC, and West Coast Conference

Interesting matchups in the Third Round
Washington vs. Nebraska, coaches almost came to blows in the 2010 playoffs in a very close match. Match will be in the same location, so it should be interesting on and off the court.
Penn State vs. UCLA, two storied programs with 10 titles (6 for Penn State and 4 for UCLA). Can Karsta Lowe carry the Bruins past a good Penn State? Penn State beat UCLA in September 3-0.
North Carolina vs. Oregon, North Carolina defeated USC, but can the defeat a better Pac-12 team?
Florida State vs. BYU, For BYU the defeat of Arizona was their best win of the season over bigger conferences having lost to Washington (5 sets) and Colorado State (4 sets). Florida State has made it to the 4th round or further twice in the last five years and could do it again.
Texas vs. Colorado State, Can Colorado State defeat the perennial power that is Texas? Luckily for them Texas will not be at home, so that may be a slight advantage.
Florida vs. Illinois, Illinois who finished 3rd in the Big Ten vs. the SEC Champs who have been on a roll with 22 wins a row.
Stanford vs. Oregon State, 3rd matchup of Pac-12 opponents this season. Beavers have never beaten Stanford (0-58) and even with their deepest tournament run, I just can't see them beating Stanford.
Wisconsin vs. Ohio State, 3rd matchup of Big Ten opponents this season (Wisconsin won both matches 3-0).

  • So sad Washington and Nesbraska are gonna meet in next round. I wanted them both in F4 beside Stanford.

Unfortunately, Nebraska is not that good this year (relative to their very high standards). They had trouble finishing the first two sets against Hofstra. In the 2nd, they lead by something like 21-13 but won eventually by only 25-23. In the second round, Utah outplayed them in the first two sets except from the service line. In the 4th set, Utah dominated and Nebraska made lots of really bad mistakes. I expect Washington will handle them easily... but I hope very much that I'm wrong.

  • Is tehre any way to watch some of this games? I know maybe Watch ESPN, but unfortunately that dont work in Brazil, cause we have our own espn here... :/

Sadly, It is going to be Watch ESPN. The Quarterfinals, will be shown on ESPNU, so you may be able to get those from Sportlemon. Those matches will be broadcast back-to-back-to-back-to-back.

First match will be at 4 pm, then 6:30 pm, 9 pm and 11:30 pm Eastern Standard Time.

    I was wrong! :cheesy:
    Nebraska upsets Washington in Seattle 20-25 25-20 25-22 29-27
Nebraska normally gets most of their offense from the outside hitters; tonight they surprised with a middle blocker going 14 of 17 on attacks, and their setter 9 of 14. Their assistant coach said they were out of substitutes at the end of the match, and the next rotation would have had a 170cm defensive specialist playing front row middle blocker. :)
