Germany - VBL Bundesliga 2015/16

  • Straubing - Aachen 3:0 (25:20 25:17 25:15)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2015-16/Women/&2069.pdf
MVP: Martina Nosekova / Dominika Valachova

The situation in Aachen is still very unclear. Some weeks ago the club announced that they need 265.000 € to be able to finish the season, and according to a report from this week they only got 20.000 € so far. I tend not to believe everything the club says, knowing how strictly VBL controls the clubs' finances before giving them a license for the season, I just can't imagine Aachen having a good plan for the season and lacking 265.000 € all of a sudden without VBL intervening before. But anyway, the situation seems problematic. A while ago they said that if they can't raise the necessary money they will quit in December so the players can make new contracts with other clubs before the transfer market closes. Now the manager says that they will continue to play if there are signs of raising the money until February. There is no official news from the club yet, the match report about today's game says they are going into Christmas break now and will restart training right after the holidays and try to organise some friendly matches in order to get in shape for the upcoming matches in January. There is also no official statement about the absence of Weihenmaier, she was already missing last weekend, in some press reports there were mentions of her being sick, in others she was injured. On VBL website she is still listed as Aachen's player. However she is probably their most expensive player, so if another club offers them some money to buy her out of the contract and she wants to leave too, I would not consider it impossible that she is gone already. But as I said, nothing official yet...

Meanwhile Whitney Little is out 6 weeks for Dresden due to an ankle injury, now that she just recovered from her hand injury from the beginning of the season. Looks like this season Dresden's traditional injury curse is all on her :S

  • According to Aachen's press release from today, Laura Weihenmaier is ill and can't do sports until the end of the month. Time will tell if this is true or if she really left the team. I also happened to find an interview with Marek Rojko from after Aachen's bad match against Hamburg and there he says that there have been problems and "misunderstandings" among the players but that the club intervened and they all sat together to sort it out and get back on track. However in their last two matches they couldn't have been any further off track :S

Top match Dresden vs Münster is now live on http://www.vbl.tv with Münster starting very well into 1st set.

  • Münster :wall:

Two match points, two great attacking opportunities from free balls, but they just can't finish it. I won't be surprised if this is a turning point for the whole match. They had Dresden down on the ground and now they helped them back up. Let's see how this goes on...

  • Stuttgart - Schwerin 1:3 (25:19 22:25 18:25 20:25)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2015-16/Women/&2071.pdf
MVP: Kim Renkema / Tabitha Love

    Dresden - Münster 3:2 (21:25 16:25 29:27 25:18 15:12) :wall:
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2015-16/Women/&2068.pdf
MVP: Laura Dijkema / Sarah Petrausch (6 aces)
Münster already had the three points in their bag but then they thought "hey, it's Christmas, let's be good guests and leave two points for the hosts" :aww: Münster played near perfect for something like 2.9 sets but just couldn't finish their match points and once Dresden was back in the game all of a sudden they made sure to accept the gift. Katie Slay with an outstanding performance, 9/10 attacks plus 8 blocks. She has made a great progress in the last weeks and found a good connection with Dijkema.

    Vilsbiburg - Wiesbaden 0:3 (20:25 21:25 25:27)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2015-16/Women/&2066.pdf
MVP: Nikol Sajdova / Jennifer Pettke

    Potsdam - Thüringen 3:0 (25:22 25:14 25:23)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2015-16/Women/&2070.pdf
MVP: Lisa Gründing / Erika Salanciova

    Tomorrow Hamburg-Köpenick.

  • Hamburg - Köpenick 0:3 (17:25 23:25 22:25)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2015-16/Women/&2067.pdf
MVP: Karine Muijlwijk / Lauren Barfield (92% in attack :super: )

Surprisingly clear result, but Köpenick played very well in service and Hamburg had injury problems. Radzuweit is still out with a broken finger, Keil got injured during warm-up and Milton bumped into the ad boards trying to save a ball in the beginning of 1st set and had to be treated outside, so the 2nd setter had to play as OH for some minutes.

    Ranking:
    1 Schwerin 13 12 38:12 34
    2 Dresden 11 9 29:12 26
    3 Münster 13 8 31:23 24

Last matches this year on Tuesday VCO vs Dresden and Potsdam vs Vilsbiburg.

  • VCO Berlin - Dresden 0:3 (12:25 15:25 21:25)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2015-16/Women/&2149.pdf
MVP: Kimberly Drewniok / Gina Mancuso

    Potsdam - Vilsbiburg 3:1 (25:13 23:25 27:25 25:16)
    http://live.volleyball-bundesliga.de/2015-16/Women/&2060.pdf
MVP: Saskia Hippe / Barbara Wezorke

Disastrous performance by Vilsbiburg  Their reception was non-existent, so the hitters had a very hard time. The only one playing well was Barbara Wezorke with 10/11 in attack, she has made great progress in her year in Brazil. For Potsdam Saskia Hippe managed to survive Marina Katic's sets without getting a back injury again and even could score 27 points out of them, and Silge with 8 blocks.

Ranking after half season (Schwerin and Münster with 1 match more):
    1 Schwerin 13 12 38:12 34

  • Good news from Aachen: they have managed to raise 80.000 € so far and are working on acquiring more new sponsors. So at least for now they will continue to play :)

However, in the long run many clubs are likely to disappear from the league. Hamburg's main sponsor leaves after this season and unless they find a new big sponsor or many small ones the club will leave as well. Köpenick and Thüringen are on thin ice since several years, Aachen has joined them now, and nobody knows yet how stable Straubing is...and there are no teams in 2nd league with ambitions to come to 1st league apparently, the step is just too big. Straubing prepared it for 2-3 years...

  • From the Second North Bayer 04 Leverkusen is eager to get back into First. And in South the SWE Volley Team from Erfurt, like Suhl from Thüringen, will also participate in the prelicensing procedures, so two could do it for next season. If Erfurt wants to replace Suhl needs to be clarified. The TV Fischbek is highly unlikely to find a substitution for Aurubis as sponsor indeed - simply the HSV empties the sponsoring opportunitites largely in Hamburg with top soccer and handball teams.

Regarding stability of the present teams: only Dresden and Schwerin are definitely well financed. Long-term endurance can be expected also from Rote Raben Vilsbiburg and USC Münster, already less sure are Wiesbaden and Stuttgart. All others are hard to judge or even unstable IMHO.

  • The TV Fischbek is highly unlikely to find a substitution for Aurubis as sponsor indeed - simply the HSV empties the sponsoring opportunitites largely in Hamburg with top soccer and handball teams.

Hamburg's bid for the olympic games was the last hope for the team. After the negative referendum, the team is a "dead man walking" and only a miracle can help. Sports sponsoring here is mostly related to both football clubs (HSV, St. Pauli) and single events like Marathon, Triathlon or Cycling.

By the way, the HSV Handball only bought the rights to use the name "HSV" and is economically not related to the football club. But that didn't help them too. They just went into administration and most likely they will not end the season.......

  • Best receiver (at least 15 receptions per match average)

This season 5 receptions per set are neaded. So some of the best receivers are out...

  • And the fans are very unhappy about it...which I can understand, IMO he did nothing wrong. There seems to be a lot going on in the background, not only the financial problems but also problems inside the team. After the Hamburg match Rojko still said that he has the club's support, 3 weeks later they fire him  I wonder what's up with Weihenmaier, if she is still with the team and really was just ill or if there's more to that as well...maybe there is a connection between her absence and Rojko being fired, who knows...
