South Korea - KOVO V-League 2018/2019 + KOVO Cup 2018

  • After watching it again: Bae Yoo-na didn't touch the ball after all. Previously I saw it only from one angle (Heungkuk side of the net) plus Tomsia reaction looked very convincing, you have to admit.

What puzzles me is situation in first set; (cant remember the exact moment) Lee Jae-young made an error and was trying to sway the referee. in situation like this, theres always a replay but they've decided not to show any.

  • News Update:

    • A big boost for Heungkuk bid for the regular season championship and terrible news for Hi-pass. Hyundai E&C today announced that their captain and leading point scorer #14 Yang Hyo-Jin (YHJ) has been ruled out of Saturday match against Heungkuk. YHJ picked up an injury to her second finger (I'm guessing it is her index finger) on her left hand whilst blocking during team training on the 5th. She was later diagnosed with ligament rupture in her finger and is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow on the 8th. Apparently, YHJ's shoulder also wasn't in great condition either. The treatment and rehabilitation period will take about 4 months to complete. YHJ hope to take this opportunity to be fully fit and ready for the Olympic World Qualifiers in early August. Sources: 1, 2, 3
    • The tryout for next season foreign players will take place in Toronto, Canada on May 1st - 3rd. The female foreigner player salary will increase from USD 150K to 180K in the first year and renew will increase from USD 200K to 230K. Also from next season, teams can replace their foreign player up to two times. Sources: 1, 2, 3
    • Remember that point from yesterday match between Heungkuk and Hi-pass when Hi-pass was leading 26-25 in the 2nd set and the referees missed the fact that a Heungkuk player (#1 Shin Yeon-Gyeong) clearly committed a net violation. Well from articles coming out today, I think KOVO fined both referees 200,000 KRW (approx. $177 USD) plus a 3-game suspension (please let me know if this is incorrect). Sources: 1, 2, 3

  • I'm really surprise that Hillstate can rise from the bottom of the league with 9 wins.... Pink Spiders must win the champion after dominating the regular....

From the players stat, I can say Yang Hyo Jin is too domineering in SK... She's "everywhere".. She's topping the spike , blocking, n open spike success rate list... added in top 5 in 2 other categories...

From that list, I also think that SK is having lack of younger players in MB and OPP position in their national team.... all 5 blockers in the blocking stats are seniors that Yang Hyo Jin is the youngest! Talk about no regeneration...:)

At least the twins Lee Jae Young and Lee Da Yeong are in their top game... They are the leaders for the next generation national team...I hope they can also shine in the national team....

  • I hope next season, you get MBs will get more chances in their team to play.

Heungkuk playing Lee Ju-ah was a surprise for me abit since I thought kim chae-yeon did a good job the previous season as a rookie. I suppose if kim se-young is injured, she'd be a sub.

Kgc park Eun-Jin and Lee ye-sol hopefully will get utilized more next season too. they dont have outstanding older players besides probably MB han soo-ji.

Hyundai Jeong ji-youn, isn't 180cm abit short for MB position? she did her job but everytime I see her hit, its like watching an OH because of her hitting form. Hipass Bae yoo-na is 180cm also but she plays like shes taller lol. Hopefully Hyundai will draft a taller MB next season.

Hipass MB is good as it is, but they should try for new ones too. Bae yoo-na may still have a couple of years with her but Jung dae-young might retire.

Gs theres no outstanding center. on a side note, gs is wasting parkhyemi away. they should just trade her for a good MB instead of benching that young talent. kang so-hwi and lee so-young shows no sign of slowing down, so parkhyemi's playtime isnt going to increase.

Gs or Hipass... who do I want Heungkuk to verse.... Hipass is strong but Gs is hungry.... so hard to choose

KYK is unable to attend as a guest this time due to the fact that the Turkish league will still be playing in April. Hyundai E&C Yang Hyo-Jin and Hwang Youn-Joo are unavailable as both players are recovering after having surgeries.

Btw the 1st playoffs match between Expressway Hi-pass and GS Caltex will begin at 19:00 KST (in about 45 minutes)

    https://www.laola1.tv/en-int/l…-gs-caltex-seoul-kixx-len

  • Yang Hyo-Jin (YHJ) is one of the best player in the league and hands down the best MB in the league. :obey:

She the all-time league leader in block kills with over 1,115 block kills (this is just in regular season only). Currently YHJ is 2nd in league in total points scored with 5,133 points (regular season only) and is only behind her teammate Hwang Youn-Joo who has 5,417 points and has played 3 more seasons than her. This season is YHJ 10th consecutive seasons leading the blocking stats and she has won blocking awards/best MB awards since the 2009/2010 season. The fact that YHJ play as a MB and is only on the court for half the time only, but to be able to score that many points show you just how good she is.

So with her FA status at the end of the season (yet to be confirm by KOVO), I won't be surprise that she will once again be the sole top earner in the league. So during the FA period after this season, I'm expecting her to get a new contract for the max amount of 350,000,000 KRW (approx. 308K USD).

GS Caltex did well to get back into the game after losing the first 2 sets. Surprisingly, GS OH Lee So-Young struggles to score. Also, GS have now loss their last 3 matches against Expressway Hi-pass, and all of them were full sets matches. If GS managed to miraculously comeback to win the next 2 matches then I think Heungkuk will win the Championship. However if Hi-pass goes through to the finals then I can see Hi-pass beating Heungkuk to the Championship.

  • Yeah, I thought Kim Chae-Yeon did well last year too. I was think that Chae-Yeon would be pair up with Ju-Ah or KGC Park Eun-Jin as the future MB for Heungkuk and didn't actually think that Heungkuk needed to fork out relative big money to recruit Kim Se-Young from Hyundai

As Park Eun-Jin develops as a player, she will become a cornerstone for KGC. Korean teams tend to hire foreign OP players, so Lee Ye-Sol might find it hard to get game time if she doesn't improve her reception.

180cm is short for a MB if you compare it to Europeans/Americans but Jeong Ji-Yun seem to have a pretty good jump. I also see her future in the OH position too. Sometime you can see her move to the left side to attack. Hyundai need both a MB and an OH who can attack plus defend at the same time.

Hi-pass MB rookie Choi Min-Ji from this year draft look pretty good in the last match against IBK despite the loss. Also I think she is about 180cm too.

Good MBs are a premium in the V-League, that's why the first 2 draft picks were MBs and the top MBs like Yang Hyo-Jin, Kim Hee-Jin, Han Soo-Ji, Kim Su-Ji, Bae Yoo-Na, and Kim Se-Young are all at the top of the highest paid players. Yes it sad that Park Hye-Min might be wasted away on the bench. Hyundai could really use her but I don't see them having anything GS would want to trade with that Hyundai is willing to let go. KGC might have some players they could trade her with. IBK might need her if they loss Go Ye-Rim after FA period but I don't see them have anything to trade GS with too. Btw it is Park Hye-Min (with an 'n' at the end).

On record, GS is the safer bet for Heungkuk. GS have only won 7 of their last 15 matches compare that to Hi-pass who have won 12 of their last 15 matches (would have been 13 if they played their starters in their last match against IBK). Hi-pass have defeated Heungkuk the last three times they have met (3-2, 3-0, and most recently 3-1) and Hi-pass hold a 4-2 win-loss record against Heungkuk this season. Whilst GS vs Heungkuk, on the other hand is 3-3 this season with Heungkuk winning the last 2 matches 3-0. IMO Hi-pass is the inform team out of the three teams.

Btw Heungkuk 11 win out their last 15 matches. So from the 4 losses, 3 were from Hi-pass whilst the last was from GS.

  • yeah, as much as I want heungkuk to not repeat history over, if hipass goes to finals, deeeeeeep down inside, I already know the result. that's why I'd rather have gs go to finals.

*thanks for the correction on parkhyemin, missed the n

  • Whatever the outcome, Heungkuk staff is probably very content.

Once again GS Caltex showed true fighting spirit. KOVO playoff schedule is rushed,

both teams have only 1 day to recover after playing two intense 5 set games. I think in this situation GS-Caltex have a slight edge. Average age of their starting lineup (in today's game) is 24. Hi-Pass is much older team: 31+. I'm really looking forward to final game.
