Qualifications for the European Championship 2011

  • Finland, Germany and Portugal are close to book their spots for the final round

Luxembourg, May 28, 2010. The second round of qualifiers for the 2011 CEV Men’s European Championship started this afternoon with many interesting matches and a couple of teams, i.e. Germany and Portugal, approaching very quickly to book a spot for the final round to be played next year in Austria and Czech Republic. On the other hand, the competition for that single berth is still extremely tough in Pool A, C and D, where two or even three teams are still in full contention for that much wanted ticket. With a quite convincing performance against Great Britain in Heraklion, Finland is also still unbeaten and may celebrate the qualification for the European Championship already on Saturday. Stay tuned for more emotions to come!

Pool A in Tel Aviv (ISR)

    Israel vs. Spain 1:3 (22-25, 25-15, 23-25, 14-25)
    Hungary vs. Slovenia 2:3 (21-25, 29-27, 18-25, 25-19, 8-15)

Pool A stands out as one of the most unpredictable qualifiers for the 2nd round of the 2011 CEV Men’s European Championship. After the first round robin played last week in Maribor Slovenia topped the standings having scored a massive home victory against 2007 European champion Spain. This afternoon the second round robin tournament started in Tel Aviv with about 750 fans cheering for the local guys in their match against the Spaniards. After a very tight battle, Spain maintained solid nerves in the so-called “money time” to claim the first set 25-23, but Israel displayed some great Volleyball in the second section of the game, leading the way first 4:0 and then 12:4. Spain tried to claw back (18:13) but it was quite a late comeback and Israel squeezed in with a mighty 25-15. The third set was also extremely close, with a tie at 17, before Spain got a slight margin to cruise past for the final 25-23. The Israelis paid their price in the fourth set, with Spain sailing away in great fashion for the 25-14 that put an end to the local hopes to vie for a tie-break.
Today’s second game, starring Slovenia and Hungary, lasted for more than a couple of hours. Slovenia enjoyed the better start (25-21) but Hungary leveled the count after a tremendous final section of the second set. Slovenia sailed away pretty comfortably in the third set (25-18) but Hungary was not ready to bury the hatchet and called it for a tie-break. The Slovenians profited of their international experience to lead all the way through there for the final 15-8 to maintain the provisional leadership in that Pool, waiting for the decisive match against Spain.

    Pool B in Heraklion (GRE)

    Great Britain vs. Finland 0:3 (22-25, 22-25, 17-25)
    Greece vs. Latvia 3:0 (25-13, 29-27, 25-17)

Finland and Greece started with victories their first day in the second tournament of the qualifier for the 2011 CEV European Championship being staged at the sports hall of Alikarnassos. They both beat their opponents, Great Britain and Latvia respectively, with a 3:0. Finland had a slow start against Great Britain that still remains without a victory in the second preliminary round. The team of Berruto finally confirmed the estimation that they are the favorite and won the game with a 3:0. Best scorer for Finland was Mikko Oivanen with 11 points, followed by Shumov and Matti Oivanen who scored 10 each. Berruto said after the game: “After the matches in Latvia we travelled for 10 hours and had only two hours of practice. That’s why we didn’t start well in all the sets. It was very important for us to win and we did it”. The Dutch coach of Great Britain, Harry Brokking commented: “We are a new nation in Volleyball. We have no Volleyball culture but playing against top teams, like Finland for instance, we get better. That’s why we are here”. Finland’s captain Jukka Lehtonen commented: “There was a lot of pressure on our side being the favorites for winning. I believe that in a few years Great Britain will be a tough opponent for every team”. The team captain of Great Britain Benjamin Pipes said: “Finland is a stronger team, with more experience. The important thing for us is that we are constantly improving. We want to think positive for our next match against Greece”.
The hosting country Greece made the fans of Crete very happy by starting the competition with a 3:0 victory against Latvia, which gives them a good chance of finishing second in the pool and qualifying for the home and way matches in September. “We are doing our best improving day by day. We served well and had a good blocking system. We haven’t been practicing together for a short while so, of course our main goal is to qualify for the next round but we also try to grow better as time goes by” said the Greek coach.
Latvian mentor Raimonds Vilde, who addressed the journalists in Greek language, commented: “I’m not happy with our performance. We didn’t show our character. Greece was aggressive in the service, causing many mistakes in our reception”.
Nikos Roumeliotis, the Greek captain, said: “We played better than in Latvia. Between Italy and Turkey, if we qualify for the next round, I prefer Turkey”. Latvia’s captain, Armands Celitans, stated: “It was a surprise for us not to play as well as we did in Riga”.

    Pool C in Merksem (BEL)

    Bosnia & Herzegovina vs. Slovakia 0:3 (19-25, 12-25, 19-25)
    Belgium vs. Ukraine 3-1(26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22)

In the first game of the European qualifier being currently played in Merksem/Antwerp (Belgium) the Bosnian players couldn’t surprise a very strong and solid Slovak team that cruised past pretty easily with a 0:3 (19-25, 12-25, 19-25). Martin Sopko and Martin Nemec immediately put some real pressure on the Bosnian defence, but Dejan Pelemis - with his blocks and an ace - could restore some hopes for his team closing the gap first to 7:8 and then up to 11:15. Saving three set points was the only thing that Bosnia could afford before a block of Divis called it over for the 19-25. The attacks of Martin Nemec and a lot of killing blocks contributed to a quick second set (12-25). In the third set it was again Bosnian Dejan Pelemis who took profit of a certain lack of concentration among the Slovaks and of some individual faults. But at 11:11 Nemec – who claimed this year’s GM Capital Challenge Cup with the Italian club based in Perugia – showed off with strong serves and tactical attacks which team was the best on court this afternoon. “Even if we had a player with stomach problems, we could play the way that we had prepared for this game. It was important to win against Bosnia & Herzegovina with a 3:0 in order to win this tournament” was the conclusion of Slovakia’s head coach Emanuele Zanini. His Bosnian colleague, Nikola Matijasevic, agreed. “Slovakia was too strong for us. They have a strong service, a good defence, always a lot of massive blocks, while we couldn’t bring enough variations in our game. Also the reception failed, so the 0:3 is a normal result”.
Already last week in Poprad Ukraine had proved that it could make it difficult for the Belgian team as they won the match there with a 3:1. Even in their home country and supported by a noisy audience in the Lotto Arena in Antwerp, the local guys had a lot of problems with the visitors from Ukraine, but finally they won the match 3:1 (26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22). Especially with ‘star’ Oleksandr Statsenko the Belgians had – again – a lot of difficulties to stop his strong serves and attacks in the first set (4:9 and 16:19 for Ukraine). But then captain Frank Depestele took his responsibilities and with his bombs he destroyed the Ukrainian defence (23-22). The visitors could save one set point, but with the ace of Tuerlinckx they were forced to leave the first set to the guests. This defeat broke a bit the enthusiastic start of the visitors. They continued with a lot of service faults, while Van Walle and Depestele were practically unstoppable (16:10). At 20:13 Babkov blocked so well that Belgian coach Gewehr had to ask a time-out. It was enough for Van Walle to make a splendid end on set two in his home-town. But in set three the players from Ukraine could solve their problems, even though the Belgians came back from 8:12 till 16:13, thanks to the work of Van Walle and Verhanneman and the destroying service work of Frank Depestele. Some individual faults of the home-team and an error of Van de Voorde gave the visitors an unexpected and important win. A lot of turnarounds in a thrilling fourth set, but it was again captain Frank Depestele who took his team under his leading wings and with the help of Van Walle (top scorer for Belgium tonight with 18 points) he gave his team the possibility to stay in contention for a ticket for the 2011 CEV European Championship. “We knew it wouldn’t have been an easy task against the Ukrainians. But we have to win three games to qualify for the European Championship final round” said the Belgian captain. “We gave them a knock down by winning the first set, Van Walle was unbelievable, but our work is not finished”. Statsenko, the best attacker of his team with 27 points, agreed that too many missing points on serve (24 in the whole match) were a big reason for the defeat of his team. *But we can change the situation if we win tomorrow against Slovakia”.

  • Pool D in Tübingen (GER)

    Estonia vs. Montenegro 3:2 (25-15, 25-20, 18-25, 25-27, 16-14)
    Croatia vs. Germany 0:3 (13-25, 21-25, 23-25)

The German national team is still on a very good way to qualify directly for the final round of the 2011 CEV European Championship. The team of head coach Raúl Lozano won the first match of the second tournament in the Paul-Horn-Arena of Tübingen against Croatia with a quick 3:0. After the three straight 3:0 victories clipped last weekend in Bar it was the fourth victory in a row for the Germans. If Germany wins again tomorrow against Montenegro, the direct qualification for the final round in Austria and Czech Republic will be booked even before the last match scheduled for Sunday. Best scorer of the German team was Jochen Schöps (14) while Andelko Cuk (18) stood out for Croatia. The Croatian team claimed the first point but then just one team was to be seen on the court: particularly Jochen Schöps and Robert Kromm in service and attack scored regularly because the Croats could not resist and cope with the hardness and accuracy of their hits. Even though the tail lamp of Pool D improved in the second set, in the decisive phase the hosts showed their qualities – two times in attack, one single block – and made sure a preliminary decision. The Croats did several substitutions and it seemed that they irritated the Germans by doing that: four German second line attacks (Kromm and Schwarz) did not bring success (7:11). Team Germany came back with several good actions of the players Patrick Steuerwald and Max Günthör which brought the lead back (17:16) and the resistance of the bravely fighting Croats was gone. With this victory Germany did the next step towards the final round of the European Championship in Austria and Czech Republic. German head coach Raúl Lozano: “We played a very good first set, but then we slowed down. Especially in block and defense and in service we made too many mistakes. Against Montenegro and Estonia we will play better”. Croatian head coach Dragan Bozic: “The German team is very well organized. During the match we were able to improve the quality of our game. In the end it was unfortunately not enough to win a set. Our aim this weekend is to win one match – no matter which one”.
The starting match of the second round robin of Pool D in the Paul-Horn-Arena in Tübingen featured a 3:2 victory for Estonia Montenegro. With this result the team of head coach Avo Keel still has the chance to win the tournament and therefore achieve the direct qualification for the final round scheduled for next year in Austria and in the Czech Republic. Best scorer for Estonia was Oliver Venno (21) and Milos Culafic (24) topped the charts for Montenegro.
With Estonia having suffered a tie in the set count in last week’s tournament after having led the way 2:0, the guys from Tallinn wanted to avoid this scenario today. They started their match accordingly: setter Kert Toobal distributed in a variable way and Oliver Venno finished successfully most of his attacks. Block and defense with Poland’s professional Ardo Kreek did also a good job, so the match seemed to be an easy victory for Estonia. However, Montenegro came back into the game fighting hard for every ball especially in block and defense. Furthermore Montenegrin diagonal player Milos Culafic who was the best scorer in the League Round of this year’s CEV Champions League came into play better and better. The equalization in the set count was the result. Dejan Cabarkapa finished the job silvering the fourth set point for Montenegro. As it was the case last week in Bar the fifth set had to decide about the victory between the two teams and again Estonia celebrated at the end. Jaanus Nommsalu, who was honored for his 100th international match before the game, scored the last point. The head coach Estonia Avo Keel said: “We faced the same scenario as in Montenegro. The players started strong. After winning the first and second set, the players hoped the third one to be easy. However, Montenegro played very good. But finally we won, that is what counts. I am satisfied with my team”. Montenegro’s head coach Radovan Malevic added: “It was a similar match like the one we had played in Montenegro. Nevertheless I am satisfied with my players because it’s a young team. It is not easy to play a European Championship 2nd round but we get more and more experience and become better and better”.

  • Pool E in Gioia del Colle (ITA)

    Turkey vs. Romania 3:0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-23) :cup:
    Belarus vs. Italy 0:3 (21-25, 19-25, 19-25)

In Pool E Turkey and Italy continue their fight for the single slot at stake to advance directly to the final round of the 2011 CEV European Championship as they both scored on Friday 3:0 wins against Romania and Belarus respectively. Turkey cruised past Romania pretty easily (25-22, 25-16, 25-23) and the guys of coach Veljko Basic have a total of 8 points out of 4 matches played. The Turkish team clinched the first set 25-22 after a good start of Romania that had maintained the lead until the provisional 14:16. Then Turkey levelled at 17 and after a close battle, Turkey changed gear in the crucial moments (23:22 and 24:22) to claim the first set. The Turks led without any problems all the way through in the second set to score there a massive 25-16. In the third and last set Romania started off very good and led 4:1, but Turkey demonstrated once again to be a good team and after a recovery and a lot of errors in service for the Romanian team (17 in total) won also the last set 25-23 and the game. Top scorer of the match was the captain of the Romanian team, Bogdan Olteanu, with 16 points.
Later in the evening Italy outclassed Belarus 3:0 (23-25, 19-25, 19-25) to try to catch up with Turkey. In the first set Belarus had a good start, but Italy recovered the gap to lead 9:13. One ace of Savani and some good defensive actions allowed Italy to have a slim lead that in the end of the set was decisive: this section of the game ended at 23-25 thanks to Savani (another ace and 5 points) and Fei (4 points). The Italian team played a good defensive match especially with libero Davide Marra, the score went quickly up to 8:12 for the “Azzurri” in the second set. Two blocks of Artur Udrys against Matej Cernic granted a 2-point lead to Belarus but Alessandro Fei played very well in the second section of the set scoring a total of 12 points and contributing to the final 19-25.
In the last set Italy enjoyed a good start thanks to the good mastery of setter Valerio Vermiglio helped by an excellent defense of libero Marra, but Belarus didn’t surrender. Italy led by 4 points (11:15), before speeding up to win the match. Protagonists of the match were Alessandro Fei with 19 points, Savani (10) but also Davide Marra with 93% of efficiency in reception.

    Pool F in Rotterdam (NED)

    The Netherlands vs. Sweden 3:0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-18)
    Portugal vs. F.Y.R. of Macedonia 3:0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21)

The “orange” guys of former Olympic champion and head coach Peter Blangé claimed a convincing win over Sweden this afternoon in Rotterdam. The final score (25-14, 25-14, 25-18) speaks for itself. Swedish star Marcus Nilsson was not able to delight the Dutch fans with his normal level. And without their important attacker at his top, the chances of the Swedes got significantly slimmer. The first set resulted in an easy win for The Netherlands. With pressure through some good serving from Wytze Kooistra and a lot of errors in serving and attack on the Swedish side, the Netherlands took the first set with a clear 25-14. In the second set The Netherlands took a comfortable 16:8 lead through again some good serving and a solid defense. Sweden could not control their passing and side-out and lost the second set with the same ratio (25-14). In the third set, Sweden made some good attacks, but the Dutch victory was never in danger. The Netherlands took this set 25-18. Head coach Peter Blangé was pleased with his team. ”We needed to win all of the remaining three games and this first victory was a very convincing one. With this win we know that the next game against Macedonia will be crucial in this qualification round. We have to play at the top of our level to claim a victory against them”.
Portugal made a big step towards qualifying for the 2011 CEV European Championship. The Portuguese claimed a big 3:0 victory against the number two in Pool F, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Portugal showed their great quality as a team and could always rely on the individual quality of important players like Miguel Joao Jose and mostly opposite Valdir Sequeira. Based on a steady passing system, powerful attacks and good blocking Portugal had the initiative all match long. Macedonia played some good points, but they were never really in control. Portugal began strong in the opening set. They quickly had a 4:0 lead, but the team of Macedonia faced another problem with the injury of their key player Jovica Simovski. He had to leave the match after only five points for an ankle injury. Portugal extended their lead with some powerful serving and good blocking. The claimed the first set 25-17. The second set was mostly the set of opposite player Valdir Sequeira. He scored many points with his big serve and spectacular attacks. At the net as well as behind the three meter line he was unstoppable for the Macedonian block and defense. Even though Macedonia made three points in a row at the end of the set, Portugal won the second set with the score of 25-21. In the third set Macedonia seemed to be heading to a victory, but a few errors in passing and attacking at the end disturbed this win. Portugal decided the match with two killing blocks and won the set 25-21 and therefore the match 3:0. This means Portugal is still without losing a match and even without dropping a set. Therefore they are the clear leader in Pool F. Tomorrow they can ensure their place at the 2011 CEV European Championship by defeating Sweden.

"Lo sbaglio più grande e quello di credere di aver vinto prima ancora di giocare la partita"

  • I I hope Greece can still make it to Euro champ, because they are a regular participant with very good players, and will make the tournament more interesting once they find their rhythm. However, I don't quite agree with the posts that Greece is better than Finland. Historically this might be true, but right now I think Finland has more potential!

and the coach of finland said that greece is better team than finland.but finland have made training for one month also greece hasnt kournetas,christofidelis,pantaleon... .in the e.c we won easy spain(spain had match poit in the match will poland.in the matches with france, germany we had many problems.problems lke ous hadnt any team.i think that we are better

  • Turkey are a home team, still. They need more experience at top level tournaments. Italy most probably will beat them and they will have the spot, and Turkey will go to the third round

  • Israel - Hungary 3-0 (25-21 25-17 25-21)

    Latvia - Finland 2-3 (25-27 25-14 25-12 14-25 11-15)

    Belgium - Bosnia Herzegovina 3-0

    Croatia - Estonia 0-3 (12-25 22-25 20-25)

I don't know what is going on, but Turkey loose to Belarus 3-2, now Sweden which took only 1 set in overall qualifying, now is driving crazy Portugal leading with 2-0. :what:

  • Sweden's just lost. :aww:
    Nilsson 36 points!!!

    Set 1: 25:18 Set 2: 25:20 Set 3: 18:25 Set 4: 21:25 Set 5: 9:15
What it comes to Turkey I guess no one but the Turks themselves believes this team.

  • Same thing with Greece, they were down 2-1 in sets and 7-4 in set5 and somehow manage to win 17-15, so now they need one set tomorrow vs Finland to enter third round. They almost managed to loose EC at home, in fact they deserved to be out according to their performance this 2 weekends   :aww:

But, seems we had some funny discussion with some members last week cause:

    SPAIN - SLOVENIA 1-3 (27-25 14-25 26-28 21-25) prooven once again :teach:

  • Slovenia is already in European Championship 2011...i hope that they can play others tournamets like European League, because they are young and need to play to reach another level...The league in Slovenia is not strong, so the NT needs to play as much as possible..

Netherlands will play the 3rd round..i think they will face Estonia (they have improved a lot this season)..it will not be a easy game, but i hope they can play a great volleyball in the 2 games..tomorrow they will have the chance to beat Portugal, and i hope they succeed.

Belgium and Slovakia will decide who will be the first and the second team tomorrow...i will cheer for belgium, but it will not be a easy game...Belgium NT is young and they can play a great game one day and the other not so good. I don't understand why Belgium and Slovenia is not participating in European League because they have a lot of talent players that needs to play as much as possible..And they are much better than Austria and Romania..

  • Yeah, suck on that Macedonia!!! I arrived in Rotterdam just after Holland had finished their match :( But what I saw after was possibly even better!

NILSON VS Portugal and Nilson ALMOST won! That dude is amazing! It was fantastic to see that the Portugese were obviously two classes better than the Swedish players, but then Nilson was two clases better than the Portugese! Such an impressive player... I hope he does go to Copra, I think he would do amazing.

Also the captain of the Portugese Hao Jose (or something??), the guy that plays for Friederichshaven was quite on form. he scored 15 out of 17 attacks! It was a true battle of the captains (Nilson is captain too)! Portugal didn't play too well though. I think we'll have an interesting match against them tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure we're gonna trash them. It's time for revenge, portugal is playing shit and I think they already qualified now.

PS: Nilson also almost killed one of the Linesmen with one of his spikes. He's also REALLY good at scoring really crappy sets (sometimes he can't even jump on them and he STILL scores!).

  • CONGRATULATIONS TO GERMANY,PORTUGAL ,FINLAND,SLOVENIA.I THINK THAT ITALY WILL WIN TURKEY.GREECE WANTS ONE SET BUT HAS AND MORE POINTS THAN LATVIA.I DIDNT LIKE GREECE AGAINST BRITAIN.IN THIS TOURNAMENTS GREECE HASNT PLAY GOOD.I DIDNT LIKE ALL THE GREEK GAMES!SLOVENIA WIN SPAIN AND I AGREE WITH THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT NEEDS GAMES IN EUROPEAN LEAGUE.
IF GREECE PLAY AGAINST TURKEY I THINK THAT GREECE WILL WIN TURKEY BUT WE NEVER KNOW.I DIDNT EXPECT A WIN AGAINST TURKEY FOR BELARUS.GOOD LUCK TO ITALY!!! TOMMOROW WILL BE A VERY GOOD GAME PORTUGAL-NETHERLANDS.AND THE TWO TEAM CAN WIN BUT I THINK THAT NETHERLANDS IS LITTLE BETTER. :read:

Really?? I heard we (the Dutch) played really well? Especially Dick kooy? Or you mean the match wasn't so attractive, because it was pretty one sided? and no real tension?

Yeah the setter did look pretty talented and passionate, still a few setting errors, but no more than the portugese one! Their setter is also really young, but you can tel;l a lot of times the attackers weren't even able to attack or even touch the ball.

The Match of holland wasn't much attractive, Macedonia was not good at all. And Dick was great in second set,but first set was nothing...

  • greece beat finland.and the two teams hasnt players.greece(christofidelis-panataleon-kournetas-smaragdis) finland esko-miko oivanen-siltala and shumov played a little.greece didnt play good at the first set and we could win more easily the third set.but we have made a little( preparation 3-4 trainings).i am very sad because if we have make bigger preperation we will be the first team of this pool. But it doesnt matter.now we have to prepare for the e.l. in which i am sure that we will play better.italy beat turkey very easy.i think that we will go to the e.c. beacause we have a better team.in a other matche the netherlands win easy porugal! i dont know if they will go to the e.c. beacause estonia is a very strong team and we never know.slovenia ,slovakia, germany, spain, porugal and finland  qualife to the e.c... i think that greece and netherlands is better than finland and portugal.

    :set: :bump: :olympia: :offtopic:

  • Real solid performance by Slovakian team in first two sets:

solid blocking, powerful serving, especially by Sopko, thereby forcing a lot of errors in Belgian reception and attack.
Verhanneman looked somewhat tired and Van Walle was quickly substituted for Van den Dries in the first set.

Finally, Belgium had a good start in the 3th set: Van Walle re-entered the starting line-up and opened the set with 2 kills on position 2 and a serie of good serves.
Belgium started to serve better and the Slovakian team (for the first time under pressure) finally started committing personal errors.

In the 4th set, Slovakia had the best start, the score was really tight up to 14-14.
Finally, a long dispute at the net with Depestele and the referee involved, resulted in 2 yellow cards, one for each team.
Depestele and Tuerlinckx (great kill block on Martin Nemec) scored the next two points, but after that, Slovakia was in control:
again powerful serving and forcing Belgian attack to one error after another.

Disappointing ending of what I hoped to be a climax of suspense.
    25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 25-20

This series was an opportunity to get to know an attractive Slovakian team, I'll be watching them closely from now on.

In the next weeks, Belgian coach Claudio Gewehr, will decide whether he will continue coaching the national team.
He's worried about the continuation of the national team program, since Marc Spaenjers decided to resign.
Marc Spaenjers is more or less the architect of our national volleyball youth program.
