2023 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship (30 August - 6 September, 2023)

  • Actually 4T is not the only regular starting player who's missing.. no.11 Trinth their best OP and top setter Oanh are also not playing now. Could it be that coach Kiet is resting them ahead of the SF ?

Understandable, saved the forte for SF. It'd cost the team too much to try to beat THA here with full force, not enough reward for that, chance ain't big either, the team has never defeated THA NT A all these decades, not even ever won two sets in any match... win facing JPN, lose facing CHN, just no difference for VIE. They did the logical thing.

It was a funny match

Vietnam’s strongest squad minus OP Kieu Trinh took the first set from Thailand’s strongest squad minus Chatchu-On and Thatdao, as if to make a statement. It freaked coach Danai out so bad that Chatchu-On came in for the remaining sets. But after the first set, coach Kiet withdrew the main squad and more or less used the Vietnam squad during the 2nd leg of SEAVleague. Even then, they caused trouble for the Thai team.

  • Shockingly losing to Vietnam, South Korea left the Top 4 in Asia with a bitter taste since the tournament's inception

South Korea officially left the Top 4 strongest teams in the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship since the tournament was held, the biggest reason being the shocking loss to Vietnam.

In the opening match of the 2023 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship, the South Korean women's volleyball team suffered defeat against Vietnam, almost having to stop right from the group stage. According to the announced competition format, South Korea must reuse the results of the match with Vietnam in the 8-team round (classification round).

In the round of 8 teams, South Korea lost 0-3 to Thailand and won 3-0 to Australia. But when adding the results of the group stage, South Korea ranked third in Group E and missed the opportunity to enter the semi-finals. It is known that this is THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY of the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship that South Korea has not appeared in the Top 4 strongest teams since the tournament's inception [since 1975].

The South Korean women's volleyball team received the shock of leaving the Top 4 strongest teams at the Asian Championship since the tournament was held.

It is unclear what the team's fate will be when they fail to achieve their goal of reaching the semi-finals, but with this result, the team has received many malicious words from fans when their results from the world arena are poor. Even in 2023, they just had their very first victory against Australia, one of the weakest teams in the 2023 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship.

But the fault is not entirely due to the players not performing well, but because of the crisis of forces after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where South Korea won the 4th place eventually. They have no choice but to rejuvenate the squad, starting everything from the starting line.

Tomorrow, the South Korean women's volleyball team will enter the 5-8 qualifying round with India. If they win, South Korea will play the 5th place match with the winner of the match between Australia and Kazakhstan. If South Korea loses to India, they will play the 7th place match with the losing team in the above match.

“There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”

  • Set 5, trailing at 12-14 coach ZHAO Yong called time out. Afterwards Zhou Yetong's attack succeeded to side out. At 13-14 the sub pair setter & OP came in, Yu Jiarui & Miao Yiwen replaced Xu Xiaoting & Zhou Yetong. What's distinctive in the hindsight, Yu had the steel nerve, just came in all the way throughout this five-set match to serve at the near finish line, it also showed the coach's confidence upon her. Yu was not played often, but at some crucial moment she's called in, a reliable sub, showing the strong psyche. Btw, Liu Yu seems to be relatively quicker cf. Yang. Liu is also played more often than Wang Wenhan, esp. in the tough matches. She's the MB #2. OTOH, there's no reliable sub for Zhong Hui even when she's down, played erroneously, or exhausted during tough games, at least in the eyes of coach Zhao, the bench OHs remain in the cold feet, Duan & Wang YZ, they are not coming to sub Zhong, a sad situation to see players just make up the list but not get the sufficient level of confidence from coach (right or wrong) to serve the intended purposes. I am not optimistic that Duan or Wang YZ will have meaningful court time, if any, at the remaining matches.

It was another unconvincing performance. Reception, passing, setting, blocking are not up to par...to the extent that, the Vietnamese coach might’ve decided that they make an easier opponent compared to Japan :aww:

The only bright spot is that... it can only get better :/

  • to the extent that, the Vietnamese coach might’ve decided that they make an easier opponent compared to Japan :aww:

I think Coach Kiet must have had this exact thought. Beating CHN is still a reach for Vietnam but it’s more much doable compared to beating Japan. Vietnam does not do well against teams that have good passing and floor defense (Thailand, Korea, Indonesia - Taipei is an exception since Vietnam’s blocking can shut their attackers down pretty quickly). They cannot “hang” with these teams in long rallies, especially in the later sets. On the other hand, Vietnam can find ways to exploit the many imperfections to frustrate this Chinese squad and hope for a slim chance of winning.
