Btw, here are the Best Seven from previous seasons

  • Yang Hyo-Jin received 24 votes out of 30 for MVP, whilst Lee Da-Yeong and Valentina Diouf both received 3 votes each.

Diouf only got 3 votes? That was surprising. I thought her no. of votes would be neck and neck with Yang Hyojin's.

Btw, I wonder what's fair play award? How do they judge it? It's not like volleyball players can cheat referees like footballers do to get free kicks or something lol

  • News Update from KOVO Board of Directors Meeting (April 9, 2020)

    Tryout:

The female tryout was scheduled for next month from 10-13th in Prague, Czech Republic but due to the spread of COVID-19 around the world, the schedule for the tryout will now be changed with no new date announced. The female application deadline has been extended again until May 10th. KOVO will continue to review and discuss the situation closely. If the tryout cannot be held, KOVO will supplement it with another method of checking player capabilities (yet unknown) in addition to using video. KOVO will aim to have the foreign players draft completed around June at the latest.

    Salary Cap:

The female teams' salary cap has been increased to 2.3B KRW (1.8B KRW base salary cap + 500M KRW for option cap). The 2.3B KRW salary cap does not include 300M KRW for winning allowance, this is money a team receive for winning all their matches including post-season matches (so potentially a team maximum salary could be a total of 2.6B KRW). The max. a single player can earn is 700M KRW, this is max. salary of 450M KRW (max. 25% of the salary cap) and a max. option of 250M KRW (max. 50% of the option cap). The previous salary cap of 1.4B KRW did not include option and there was no limit on option. I am not sure what the "option" is but I'm guessing it is basically a performance-based bonus.

I have not seen a confirmed list of all the players who have qualified for Free Agent status yet. Hopefully, it will be out soon since the FA period start today (April 10th) for two weeks.

  • Diouf only got 3 votes? That was surprising. I thought her no. of votes would be neck and neck with Yang Hyojin's.

Btw, I wonder what's fair play award? How do they judge it? It's not like volleyball players can cheat referees like footballers do to get free kicks or something lol

Yeah, I though she a few more votes too. I think part of the reason why Diouf didn't get more vote was because KGC wasn't in the top 3 teams and they didn't win as many matches as Hyundai. Diouf obviously out scored everyone by a country mile but she so many more sets from KGC setters.

On the other hand, I can see why Yang Hyo-Jin a "middle blocker" got the MVP this season. Not only did she come in 1st overall in blocks, she also came in 6th overall in point scored (5th overall if they only count up to Round 5) and 1st overall in spikes, plus Hyundai came in 1st place with the most game points and wins.

Fair play award to me is like a good behaviour or good sportsmanship award. According to the KOVO website:

Fair play award is awarded to a team based on the regular season.

80% from voting and 20% from team's record.

Voting: 30% from professional committee + referees, 40% from the media, 10% from coaches/captains or leaders.

11 people in professionals committee and 29 referees, 1 vote each person.

The media get 1 vote for each company.

Team's record: Point a deducted from 20 point for each of the following infraction:

    Disqualification - 10, Set sent off - 5, Red Card - 3, Yellow Card - 1.

Sorry, I tried to translated it as best as I could from online sites.

    News Update:

    • Heungkuk Pink Spider libero Kim Hae-Ran announced her retirement today. In one news article, she cited one of her reason for her retirement was she wanted to start a family. Sources: 1, 2, 3
  • MVP, Best 7, n Best Rookie are all as predicted... congrats to all the winners...

Wow.. There are 5 core NT players that FA (Lee twins, Kim SJ, Kim HJ, Park JA) with 2 backup NT players (Yeum HS and Han SY)...

Though the capped is increased, but this pandemic is made economy going down all around... so I think the clubs don't have that high of budget.... They must play "smart" in signing the local and foreign players...

This pandemic also make the possibility of going abroad become slim this year.. Clubs from other countries are also prioritized their local players... Also considering Olympic will be held next year...

I wonder if there is a club that can give Kim HJ OP priority and hired foreign OH.... added Lee DY.... maybe Altos or KGC...

Kim SJ and Han SY is on their "senior" years... I think they only will play until OG.. Like KYK...

Kim Hae Ran retirement make a possibility Kim Yeongyeon to be hired by Pink Spiders....

  • I wonder if there is a club that can give Kim HJ OP priority and hired foreign OH.... added Lee DY.... maybe Altos or KGC...

My wish: Kim Heejin to Hyundai play as OP and Hyundai hire foreign OH. They did this before right ? When Hwang Younjoo played as OP and Elizabeth as OH. The big question is whether Lee Dayeong will stay or not.

Kim Haeran retirement is quite a big hole for Heungkuk. I realized how important libero role was when Hyundai's main libero injured and suddenly their performance went downhill. So I don't think Hyundai gonna let go their main libero when they also have problem with backup libero.

Reading the posts about FA and the rules made my head dizzy lol. Are foreign leagues also this complicated when players transfer happened?

  • Reading the posts about FA and the rules made my head dizzy lol. Are foreign leagues also this complicated when players transfer happened?

    Me too

I may be wrong but as far as I know no one in the world has a scheme as complex as Korea. Japan doesn't have anything like Free Agency, or a draft, or foreigner tryouts or reward players, or anything like Korea. I wish Japan did do something, or allow for something, that would spread the good players around the league instead of stuffing them all on the bench of the top 4-5 teams. That seems to be Korea's goal--which I commend.

(Although Okayama showed us this year that hard work and great defense can get you to the Final :rose:)

I highly doubt Kim Hee-Jin would move away from IBK to another team. IBK in recent seasons have had OH like Madison Kingdon/Rishel and Adora Anae, who know if IBK may try to get another foreign OH again.

I can't see Lee Da-Yeong going to IBK. IMO she will either move to Heungkuk or she will stay at Hyundai. If she ends up moving to another team then there will be a domino effect for all the setters who is currently a FA.

Heungkuk won't go for Hyundai's libero Kim Yeon-Gyeon. Heungkuk last year retained OH Shin Yeon-Gyeong (SYG) for 100M KRW. This is a lot of money for someone who is not a starting player and is mainly used only to reinforce Heungkuk's defence. IMO Heungkuk has decided last year that SYG would be Kim Hae-Ran (KHR) replacement when they gave SYG that much money. This is evidently so when Heungkuk chose to play SYG in the libero position when KHR was absent or rested in 2019/20 season. If Heungkuk does decide to replace KHR with another libero then personally I think it would be KGC libero Oh Ji-Young.

Reading the posts about FA and the rules made my head dizzy lol. Are foreign leagues also this complicated when players transfer happened?

Sorry, if my explanation was difficult to understand. Here are some examples.

Let first look at what happens when Hyundai recruited Go Ye-Rim (GYR) from IBK last year. GYR was classified as a Group A player last year, meaning her annual salary was 100M KRW or more for the 2018/19 season. Because of GYR transfer to Hyundai, IBK was allowed to select one player from Hyundai. Hyundai, on the other hand, was allowed to protect a total of 6 of players including the newly recruited free agent (FA). Hyundai most likely chose to protect Yang Hyo-Jin, Lee Da-Yeong, Hwang Min-Kyoung, Jeong Ji-Yun, Kim Yeon-Gyeon, and Go Ye-Rim. As a result, IBK took Kim Ju-Hyang as the reward player from Hyundai and Hyundai had to also give IBK 2x GYR's 2018/19 season annual salary. If IBK had chosen instead not to take a player from Hyundai then Hyundai would have had to give IBK 3x GYR's 2018/19 season annual salary.

There was no example of a Group B player transfer last year so let make one up from this year FA. Hi-pass Jung Dae-Young (JDY) is a Group B this year, meaning her current annual salary is below 100M and is 50M KRW or more. Let pretend that IBK managed recruit JDY who was earning 90M KRW whilst at Hi-pass. This means that IBK would have to fork out 270M (3x the amount of JDY's annual salary from 2019/20 season) as compensation to Hi-pass.

Similarly, with a Group C player then the player's previous team would only get 1.5x the player previous season annual salary.

    I hope this helps.

Doesn't Brazil have a classification system for their NT or top players (sorry I don't know too much about this) so that Brazilian clubs can only a certain number of top players each? But yes, no other country has such complex rules and regulations regarding drafting and transfers like the South Korean do.

Same I would like to see the Japanese implement a draft system so more young players get more game time too.

  • as much as Lee jaeyeong and Lee dayeong wanna play together... I don't think they will leave their own team yet. besides, wouldn't it cost a lot to recruit one or the other?

Yeah I prefer they spreading NT players to make the league more exciting. That's one thing I like about korean league. They can't let their guard down throughout the season. Anyone can beat anyone regardless of the ranking.

But the downside is the core players need to play almost all the time making them prone to injuries or exhaustion.

Sorry, if my explanation was difficult to understand. Here are some examples.

Thanks for make it more clear and simple to understand.

One thing, why the new recruited FA player included in protected players? Is it possible for the new recruited one to change team once again before season started?

I wonder if you know what's the process if the FA player want to play abroad? I don't think this rules can be applied to foreign teams

  • Doesn't Brazil have a classification system for their NT or top players (sorry I don't know too much about this) so that Brazilian clubs can only a certain number of top players each?

Brazil does something like they rate the players 1–7 (I don't know who does the rating) and then allows only some number of 7s on each team (2 or 3, I think). And Euro teams have the max foreigners, max from the same country, and max on court at the same time restrictions.

I think you do a remarkable job describing the Korean system  It's just very complex. I imagine that once you get it things aren't so hard to follow, just for me the learning curve takes a bit of work.

As it stands right now in Japan there is only one V1 player with a "Transfer Hope" request out there. A low level player from a low level team. I don't know if it's because the team said they don't want her any more or she recognizes she'll never get court time and wants to play, even if it means going to V2. The only upside to this "Japan Way" (such that it is and whether or not it's an 'upside') is that teams stay pretty stable over time, so you don't have to change rooting gloves like I did when Han Soo-ji left KGC :box:

Brazilian Superliga used to be like sitenoise said, players rated 1-7, max 3 players with 7 points, max 32 points full squad... Then they change to only giving rate 7 or nothing for players and allowing only 2 7-rate players per team.. .Next season we won't have any of that, only foreigner limitation (3 foreigners)... South Korea will have the more complex rules award for themselves :P

  • I highly doubt Kim Hee-Jin would move away from IBK to another team. IBK in recent seasons have had OH like Madison Kingdon/Rishel and Adora Anae, who know if IBK may try to get another foreign OH again.

If Heungkuk does decide to replace KHR with another libero then personally I think it would be KGC libero Oh Ji-Young..

Lee DY, Cho SH, n Yeum HS, these 3 FA setters are main setter that played more 90 % of total play time.. especially Lee Dy n Cho SH... It will be interesting if they are replacing one another...

But I agree, Hillstate is gonna be working very hard to keep Lee DY...

I think Shin YG is not ideal for libero, posture-wise... She's too big for a libero andshe's not particularly agile either..It's not a good prispect IMO.... Pink Spider should learn from Baek Mok Hwa case, OH turn to libero but fail... though may be SYG can do better....

  • as much as Lee jaeyeong and Lee dayeong wanna play together... I don't think they will leave their own team yet. besides, wouldn't it cost a lot to recruit one or the other?

Yes, the Korean media are speculating that both the Lee twins will command high salary. They are speculating that Lee Jae-Yeong (LJY) could possibily get the max amount of 700M (salary of 450M + option of 250M) KRW.

IMO there fair chance that Lee Da-Yeong (LDY) will go to Heungkuk then there is of LJY going to Hyundai.

Kim Hae-Ran who is now retired was earning 200M KRW and if Heungkuk choose not to renewing their contract with current setter Cho Song-Hwa (not sure but how much she earn but she was definitely on +100M KRW annual salary). This mean Heungkuk will have at the very least 300M KRW available under their salary cap to make a move for Lee Da-Yeong.

Another advantage Heungkuk have over Hyundai is the compensation money each team would have to pay the other if they go after the other Lee twin. If Heungkuk was to sign LDY, based on LDY's 2019/20 salary of 180M KRW Heungkuk would have to provide Hyundai with 360M KRW as compensation (or 540M KRW if there is no reward player). On the other hand, if Hyundai was sign LJY, then based on LJY's 2019/20 salary 320M KRW Hyundai would have to fork out 640M KRW as compensation (or 960M KRW if there is no reward player). I wonder if you know what's the process if the FA player want to play abroad? I don't think this rules can be applied to foreign teams

Q1. I think the reason why the newly recruited FA players are included in the 6 protected players is to prevent a team from going out and hogging all the good players.

Hypothetically let say for example, if a Hyundai was able to retain all 3 of their FA players and also managed to recruit 2 new FA players. And let say these two new FA players are Lee Jae-Yeong and Kim Hee-Jin (unlikely due to salary cap but let pretend anyway).

So, if newly recruited FA players are not included in the 6 protected players but they are protected separately. Then Hyundai will get to protect not only Lee Jae-Yeong and Kim Hee-Jin, but basically 6 of their 7 existing key players.

But with the current rule where newly recruited FA players are included in the 6 protected players. Obviously Hyundai will be keeping Yang Hyo-Jin and Lee Da-Yeong. So from the remaining players of Hwang Min-Kyoung, Go Ye-Rim, Jeong Ji-Yun, Lee Da-Hyeon, and Kim Yeon-Gyeon, which two players will Hyundai protect? Hyundai will have a tough time deciding.

Like that old saying goes "you need to sacrifice something in order to gain something else in return". Overall, I guess this is to balance all the team in the league.

Q2. I can't say yes or no to this question because I haven't seen this happen before. Maybe this is because of the rule that newly recruited FA player must be one of the protected player that there is no such example. But a newly recruited FA player could move if they are traded in a players swap.

Q3. Sorry, I'm not sure really. I'm guessing they must play for 6 seasons in the Korean V-League and most likely have to play a certain amount of matches in one season for it to count.

  • wow Lee Dayeong really joined Heungkuk!

I know for sure Heungkuk would want to recruit her especially after Kim Haeran announced retirement but I never thought she gonna left Hyundai for real.

Her connection with all Hyundai's MBs was just so good. And kinda weird not to see her playing with Yang Hyojin anymore.

I guess Hyundai gonna put Kim Dain as main setter now.
