World League 2008

  • Does anyone know the venue for the France v Brazil games? Know it is the weekend of 20-23rd June.

I went to the France v Italy World League Games at the Bercy Area (Paris) last year and saw two great games. I am looking to book up early to take advantage to cheap flights.

    Any help much appreciated.

The venue is not yet known.

But it will most probably be Bercy. It would be a shame if the game won't take place there, since this is the only Hall enabling to have a large audience.

USA Volleyball Announces Host Cities for 2008 World League

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Feb. 19, 2008) – USA Volleyball has announced that the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis., and U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Ill., will host the three U.S. stops for the 2008 FIVB World League, which will be the final Olympic warm-up for the U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team.

The United States finished third at the 2007 World League, an exciting elite men’s volleyball competition in which the world’s best teams are divided into four pools and play for six straight weekends from June 13 to July 20. Winners from each pool will go to the final round on July 23-27 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, along with the host country and a pick from among the second-place teams in pool play.

The total World League prize purse is more than $20 million, with the winning team collecting a prize of more than $1 million.

"The World League competition is a crucial part of our Olympic preparation. We look forward to playing these important matches in Green Bay, Bloomington, and Chicago,” U.S. Men’s Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon said. “We have a very tough pool and I expect all of these matches to be closely contested and the level of volleyball will be very high."

The U.S. Men, ranked No. 3 in the world, will play in Pool C along with Bulgaria (No. 4), Spain (No. 6) and Finland (No. 22). Team USA will open domestic World League play against Bulgaria on June 20-21 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, a northwestern suburb of Chicago. Both matches will be at 7 p.m.

U.S. outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) made his debut with the U.S. Men’s Team at the 2007 World League tournament and got to play in front of hometown fans when the team played in the Chicago area.

“It will be great to play in World League again and try to improve on our third-place finish,” said Rooney, who played at Wheaton South High School. “I am looking forward to the support from the hometown fans from Chicago.”

On June 27-28, the U.S. Men will return to the Resch Center in Green Bay, where they played two World League matches against Japan in 2007, to play Finland. Both matches will be at 7 p.m.

On July 11-12, the United States will host Spain at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, in central Illinois. Both matches will be at 7 p.m. Ticket information will be available soon.

“We are thrilled to be returning to a famous sports city like Green Bay and a great venue like the Resch Center,” USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal said. “Our partners there put on a first-class event in 2007.

“We are also excited to be bringing Olympic caliber volleyball to the Midwest both in the Chicago area and in Bloomington, which may be the last U.S. city to see the U.S. Men play before they head to Beijing.”

The United States and Bulgaria have both qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games. Spain, which is the reigning European champion, still has a chance to qualify at a tournament prior to World League.

The U.S. Men have a 20-10 record against Bulgaria and most recently beat the team at the 2007 FIVB World Cup. Team USA is 12-5 against Spain, but lost to the Spaniards at the 2007 World Cup. The United States is 6-0 against Finland.

The United States has played in 10 editions of the FIVB World League since 1990. Its best results have been third-place finishes in 1992 and 2007. Brazil is the five-time World League defending champion.

For the second year, the U.S. World League matches will be broadcast, via tape delay, on ESPNU.

  • Martin Stoev said he has still right to change extended team of Bulgaria till 20 March.
    So here is extended squad:

Setters: Andrey Zhekov, Nikolay Naydenov, Ivan Stanev.

Middle Blockers: Evgeny Ivanov, Hristo Tzvetanov, Krasimir Gaydarski, Nikolay, Nikolov, Liubomir Hristov, Teodor Bogdanov

Outside-hitters: Matey Kazyiski, Metody Ananiev, Kostadin Stoykov, Todor Alexiev, Vladislav Alexandrov, Plamen Konstantinov, Miroslav Gradinarov, Tzvetan Sokolov.

Opposites: Boyan Yordanov, Danail Milushev, Vladimir Nikolov.

And there is one thing yet he said - he will include Kostadin Gadjanov in national squad, who is from Pirin Balkanstroy and is 21 years old. He is big talent, although he had played volleyball only 3 years.

  • Yeah, I've also read this. About Gadjanov.... I don't know, I personally don't think he's ready for the National Team, but if Stoev thinks it's good.. let it be. It's only an extended list anyway. Teodor Bogdanov and Lubomir Hristov also don't play very good in Levski Siconco and Pirin Balkanstroi.. but we'll see. About Aleksandorv and Gradinarov I totally agree that they should be in the list. :)

  • U.S. World League Fans Encouraged to Make Some Noise

Fans of golf and tennis know that there are certain protocols that they are expected to follow at matches.

Fans are not supposed to make noise during the serves in tennis or during the backswing in golf. Officials at these sports are even required to try to hush the crowd.

USA Volleyball would like U.S. fans to stop being polite and start being loud at the 2008 FIVB World League matches, which will be played in Hoffman Estates, Ill. (June 13-14), Green Bay, Wis. (June 20-21) and Bloomington, Ill. (July 11-12).

You don’t even have to be quiet during the serve.

Blow your horns; ring your cowbells; cheer until you lose your voice. Volleyball matches at this level are meant to be fun and loud events.

Don’t worry, the players can handle it.

“Playing an international volleyball match in Poland or Brazil is much different than playing one in the U.S.,” said U.S. middle blocker Ryan Millar (Palmdale, Calif.). “It almost seems like American fans are a little more respectful when cheering. By respectful, I mean that it seems that they are more reluctant in being loud and rambunctious, because they would rather be considered polite and not interrupt play.”

In other countries, fans are not nearly so polite and arenas are not nearly so quiet.

U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), who is playing for a Russian club team in Siberia this winter, says the fans in his town inspire him to play better.

“The arena where we play holds 2,500 to 3,000 people and it’s always full,” Priddy said. “It was about three or four months before I noticed that it really picks me up. You almost start playing to the crowd.”

In Poland, Brazil and other countries, crowds dress entirely in the country’s colors, wave signs and banners and play drums and horns during a match.

USA Volleyball wants to create the same atmosphere at this summer’s matches against Bulgaria (June 13-14), Finland (June 20-21) and Spain (July 11-12). It is encouraging fans to wear red, white and/or blue and to bring banners and noisemakers.

Most of all, it is encouraging fans to take advantage of their last chance to see the U.S. Men’s Team play in the United States before heading to the Olympic Games in Beijing.

“Fifteen-thousand-plus fans to watch a volleyball match in the U.S. is something I only dream about while playing on the National Team,” Millar said. “With that many people, it would be incredibly hard to stay quiet.”
