2020 Olympic Games - Tokyo (Female)

  • After russia's game today, I hope people stop with the Goncha bashing. She is 32years old, an introvert, but she is the one carrying this Russian team for years. She is not Russian-born but she has always dedicated most of her vball career in NT. Russia must be a high now after that massive win! :cheesy:

  • Italy look the best team by far IMO. That could all change of course but so far they’ve given complete, solid team performances and we all know that if things do get tough for them they can always press the Emergency Egonu button but they haven’t needed that yet.

    Serbia have breezed through easily enough but if they don’t get some serious contribution from Mihajlovic then I don’t see them having any chance for gold. Milenkovic-Blagojevic is not an Olympic winning OH duo. Brazil have a complete team but I’m not convinced their attackers are dominant enough. It will for sure be interesting to see how they deal with the Serbian height and power, just as it will be interesting to see Serbia cope with a team of Brazil’s level.

    Russia haven’t looked this good since like 2016 or so. Malova is still miles better than any Russian libero so having her back is vital but Fedorovtseva is probably even more important. For the first time since Kosheleva’s decline, Russia have someone who can really help Goncharova consistently, even OOS. And at her age? What a star she’ll be. Also, they would’ve lost if Busato didn’t bring Fetisova back, what a blocking display from her once she came back in. :obey:

    For China, I don’t know what to say. The whole team is underperforming and I don’t know why. They can still make the QF but beating Italy looks almost impossible right now so I doubt it. Turkey continue to impress with their amazing fighting qualities. This team isn’t beaten until the last point is over and if they keep this level up they have every chance of making the semifinals.

    As for USA, they have obviously done well to win all their matches so far and should be considered a favourite to medal. I think the colour of the medal will be decided by how consistent Thompson can be.

    Lastly I must say it was a great day of volleyball today with 3 super tight matches. :drink:

    China's making everyone look good tho... We need more samples for a good analysis, where are the statistics nerds?

  • Agree on that, Italy just have everything figured out from OH to MB to OPP

    Serbia are only using boskovic and by the time they reach the finals she will get tired and won't deliver a good performance. Unfortunately for them, their OH arent really that effective

    I feel like Serbia in these olympics will always be like USA, always getting bronze or silver but never getting a gold

  • Fetisova you are forgiven for your past transgressions. Please show this level moving forward :box:

  • If you're interested in stats after 3 games, here they are (via FIVB individual stats, I added block/serve stats, and then calculated through number of sets every team played, spike% was just a sum of individual results).

  • Literally everything is possible.

    What a tournament

    Exactly. I said before the Olympics started this is as much a psychological tournament as a physical one.

  • This China x Russia match will be an instant classic. Well, maybe not so much for Chinese fans :win:

  • China's making everyone look good tho... We need more samples for a good analysis, where are the statistics nerds?

    I don't know what analysis statistics nerds can provide in such a situation, but this is official reports of so far Olympic games (female volleyball).

    players ranking by skill

    teams ranking by skill

    Being official not make them ideal so the following notes should be consider IMO

    1) For teams ranking

    - the comparation of teams from different groups is a bit irelevant (a sample of only three matches with different;

    opponents of different levels of quality)

    - reception statistics is obviously not well done, but it is the same pattern for every team, so could make some impression about real situation at least;

    2) For players ranking

    - for avg. set column they count total of played sets by player's team not number of sets played by actual player.

  • Serbia doing amazing in every single one of them.

    Looks like our shade might lead to an epic jinx :super:

  • we love per set stats.

    and then there's volleyball world.... MBH is at the top of their best receivers list :gone:

  • Serbia doing amazing in every single one of them.

    Yup, Serbia and Italy are statistically the two-best teams of a group stage so far, and they have probably two-best individual players overall (Egonu obviously sleeping a bit so far), so I guess that may be some hint for the latter part of a tournament. But as we know, both will have their crucial tests against Brazil and USA, respectively, so it may matter, or maybe it won't. But they both have best block/set and ace/set statistics of the competition so far.
