"Victory Point Vending Machine" indeed, even in this forum people were lamenting the 2(?) countries that didn't get the chance to get their free wins against Korea

Kim Daeun is indeed a hopeful player, if she is performing this well on an international stage no less! with such little experience in the league. Also taking into consideration Korea has no OPP and Heejin is no longer a valuable contributor on the team even compared to younger players.

I know a lot of fans are hopeful for Jeong Jiyoon... but personally her level is still that of a bench player, there is not much choice from the pool of players however.

Regarding "rebuilding", the problem is that there is no rebuilding. Korea Federation is promising ridiculous "victory monetary rewards" for the team if they achieve a certain result, and before the VNLs they were still posting about their investment towards Paris Olympics. There is no way the overpaid Korea players would work towards that lofty goal for some money. In fact some would rather not join NT to focus on their club season before FA too.

This is a video which had gained some traction as of late by a veteran sports news reporter and IBK Coach Kim Hochul, daring to speak out and criticize the Korea Federation for allowing head coach Cesar to put more focus on his club over the national team, for recruiting Han Yumi as coach though she has zero past experience, and also KYK as advisor due to her stardom.

Coach and advisor are important roles to prepare the team especially when Cesar is with his club.

He also mentioned how if the Federation plans on rebuilding, they should set an achievable target & goal rather than focusing on the now (Paris Olympics) and not have any plan in place.

Long post, but Korea used to be a team supported by all and people enjoyed watching like Thailand is now. It's sad as a fan to see where they have come to because of stubbornness.

They didnt get him a visa. They wanted him to get Korean citizenship (which wasnt in his contract). He didnt want any sort of military service (I dont know the rules). There were also behind the scenes problems with management and their promises to him and the team.

    Appreciate the very interesting insight:teach:

I hope Korean media picks up on that and doesn't get bribed by the club to keep quiet on it lol

For a club that's willing to pay 330 million krw for a sub-par setter and 775 million krw for Park Jeongah, messing up during Free Agency and losing their main setter & trading her back again, wanting to sign with Lee Jaeyeong last season but retracting it after testing the waters in the media...

    What a problematic new club

It's a pity fans were looking forward to a new club in the league

I just asked someone, it wasnt about his wife.

Well there was talk about it being related to his dual citizenship and a potential problem with having to serve in the military before a certain age.

Of course the club refuted that but there's some debate on it due to the change in law recently.

I remember last year a Japanese team was supposed to play in KOVO Cup but canceled because of Covid-19.

I wonder if it was really due to covid or because Korea didn't want to lose to a Japanese team (without foreign players) #conspiracytheories

The change in the volleyball is long awaited, but if they really think this could help improve the performance of their National teams on the international stage by much... they would be disappointed

his wife got a job on the opposite side of the USA... maybe that was an issue? (or he's going to join her? idk lol)

If this is really the reason then it's a horrible excuse and a lack of professionalism on his part

I was expecting it to be a family medical issue or something for which he had no choice for

You have a club with literally the 2 'better of the lot' setters (debatedly best 2/3? Or Top 5 at least), both having been chosen for NT previously and you replace them with a foreigner slot lol

If this doesn't display Korea's setter drought I don't know what does

Korea's draft system where all the applicants are at mercy to the system & clubs' whims is just wrong. It's no wonder they are attracting poorer and poorer foreigners each year in the draft and had to increase the pay to attract more.

I feel sorry for Medi Yoku and her fans who were looking forward to playing in Korea just to be replaced. She will need to find a new club now with no fault of her own. There needs to be a penalty or compensation when clubs do this.

The other year Thailand was close to the last place was in the first edition, they were at 15th and one win ahead of the last placed Argentina, which got relegated.

You're right, and yup I remember their covid situation in 2021

my bad. I`m sorry, I should wrote "one of the worst". Don`t take this like I don`t like them, because for sure it isn`t my intention. I just wanted to say that it`s not fair and killing healthy competition.
About money...I know that its important, but earning shouldn`t go that way...

and once again. I like team Korea and I know that its not their fault in this situation. I just mentioned them for a example.

Thanks, I just wanted to point out that they were doing better previously, it wasn't 'all along' or 'always' this poor

But I fully agree that with their recent performance (not even winning sets or putting up good competition) they should be relegated rather than remain in VNL as core team - it has been extremely detrimental to Korea as well, they've since dropped from #9 to #33 in world rankings and will likely drop further by end of this VNL

I think VNL plans to review their rules & core teams again after 2024, so we will find out.

it`s so stupid rule with this "core teams". Each team should be treated the same. I have nothing to them, but the best example is Korea team. In almost each edition they are the worst team, but they don`t need to be affraid, because they are save. Why? because someone decide that rule....:aww:

VNL started in 2018 and Korea was never the worst team until 2022 & 2023.

Thailand was last place in 2 other editions of VNL as well but no one called for their removal.

Of course with how poorly Korea had been performing in 2022 & 2023, the calls for them to be removed are entirely deserving - with 0 matches won and less than a handful of sets just barely won too (almost 0), because they are not even putting up a good fight even if they lost.

But it's wrong for you to say that they were the worst team in each edition.

Also, core teams aren't just a rule. It definitely involves money & sponsorship for the international tournament to take place. Broadcasting rights sold in Korea alone surely pays a lot more than any of the Challenger Nations would. But even the media is losing interest in the Korean NT team with how poorly they have been playing with all the important players either retired or banished.

Korea, Japan and Thailand need to recruit and naturalize foreign players who are tall and strong.

    Korea will never do that.

Well recently there was a naturalized 195cm Mongolian (now Korean) player - Orkhon/Erhung, who was drafted to the Korean club AI Peppers so, it's not "never".

She's the tallest ever 'domestic' player to play in the league, but there's honestly nothing special though about her aside from her height.

And it's not that Korea has no players but they banished their two best players (of the current generation) and the other players retired early and no longer want to play. With them they could've at least won at least 2 matches, possibly more.

Well yes, it's actually not a lot compared to Lee Dayoung's article about her playing in Romania, and the news about her playing in France.

I wonder how many people will turn out in Suwon though. Even if it's homecourt, nobody wants to watch a losing match.

There's more interest for news about her 2+ years later compared to the National Team lol:gone:

I heard Suwon tickets were sold out? Not sure but I did see more people trying to sell them after Week 2 of VNL

I can't imagine being the Korean players and losing 0-3 every match played at home, perhaps they'll steal one set from Bulgaria too

I think the Korean people are not happy with the Korean team's performance as well... well people are rarely happy on Naver but still. 137 angry reactions say it all.

137 isn't considered much haha, its poor to the point some matches aren't even being broadcasted and there are barely any news coverage on it since it is the same repeated article every match

General consensus is that they know the players aren't performing well, since last year. They used to praise Cesar post-Olympics but now its more towards disdain and ignoring him.

I mean even KR team was in low period back then but their fighting spirit was still high. I don't see fire in players' eyes right now.

It's the same in the domestic league, the competitiveness in players have dropped by a lot

I felt like the competitiveness in 2020/21 was at an all time high in the league (exception being Hillstate which seemed to be in a rut, but adjusting to new setter), Soyoung had the season of her career, Sohwi had one of her best seasons too

I hope the Asian quota thing will improve the Korean volleyball league, make some competition. I mean KR national team is just too bad to watch.

Playing for the National Team should be an honour for players and also to get their names out, but the Korean league has become too comfortable for the Korean players that good players would rather avoid the NT so that they can recover/rest or train with their club instead to achieve better results domestically and earn a higher salary

Injured players are not being replaced by new players, players called up are not giving their best, players are retiring early, etc

The Asian Quota should be a good wake up call for them
Korea used to only be weaker than China and rivals with Japan, while stronger than the other Asian countries

Now they will see that they are falling behind
