Korean NT 2020

  • What? Kim Haeran won't be playing at the Olympics anymore? That sucks. She has such great defense.

I am uber sad that she's retiring but happy that she's focusing on her family. She's one of the best liberos out there. Such a shame she didn't get much recognition globally. Korean players need to venture out to foreign teams but they have such a good system to stay at home.

  • I just stumbled across this thread, Hello everybody :D

anyone have link for korea vs taiwan and korea vs thailand with korean commentators? I seriously can't stand those 2 commentators in volleyball world channel. too distracting...

I was also looking for them too but I haven't found either of those two matches.

Well in case you guys are still interested, I did not manage to find the full matches in Korean but SPOTV uploaded ~14 min highlights of both matches on their YT channel. Problem being that you cannot find it unless you search for it in hangul and even if you manage to find it you cant watch it since it is region-blocked for Korea only.

I just happen to have a link right here which enables you to watch the highlights without a vpn :whistling: Enjoy :win:

PS: I actually managed to find the full matches with Chinese commentary on bilibili and on a random website with Indonesian commentary lol but not in Korean

    KOR vs TPE

    KOR vs THA

  • Very interesting interview with coach Stefano Lavarini.

He tells us how he started coaching, having never played the game. Then, the discussion delves into the cultural differences between Italy/Brazil/Korea, the strength and weaknesses of Korean volleyball, and how he tries to promote the creativity of Korean players.

And much much more! 1 hour 45 minutes of pure delight. Enjoy!

  • Very interesting interview with coach Stefano Lavarini.

Nice. More humble and funny than he appears on court, although I imagine folks more familiar with him than I am already know that.

I couldn't catch/understand all of it because there are some things I don't know about. The 31? Sometimes his accent was hard to parse, especially because the audio/video wasn't in perfect sync. When he was talking about Asian volleyball in general I thought he was saying they play "weaker" volleyball, but then in context I figured he was probably saying "queeker" :S

I like him a lot more now. His approach of deeply studying why different cultures/different players do things the way they do before he suggests ways to change or improve them is admirable.

  • So a VERY early look at Team Korea for the Olympics (if it ever happens in 2021). Of course, a lot of change will happen this season, but let's just try to take a look at the roster as it stands right now.

Since, we can only bring 12 players, selection becomes even more crucial than other international competitions.

I think Lee So-young should be a shoe-in for a spot. She's a better defender than Pyo Seung-ju, much more versatile than Moon Jung-won and more efficient than Go Ye-rim.

The middle is a weakness. I've got a lot of love for Han Song-yi and wish her nothing less than a medal to complete her illustrious career, but for the sake of the team, it would be better to bring fresher legs. The question is who? They lack strength, someone capable of quick, mobile attacks. Jung Ji-yoon has shown flashes of impressive power at times, but is still too raw and lacks fundamentals. Lee Joo-ah, if I may be honest, still hasn't displayed any particular qualities that would warrant a selection. My dream would be for Jung Ho-young to explode this season and take over the game. In two years or less, she will chew other centers in the league, so even better if it happens sooner. As of right now, there is no one to take Han Song-yi's spot. Let's see what happens during the season!

Alternately, you could also choose to only bring two natural MB since Kim Hee-jin can moonlight as a center. That would allow you to bring another player, maybe a defensive specialist (Moon?) or a backup OP.

On the right side, you just got to go with Kim Hee-jin and Park Jeong-ah, I don't think there's a debate... Same thing for the setters. I love Cho Song-hwa, but she's too slow... Unless a young kid like Ahn Hye-jin destroys the league this season, it's gonna be hard to take a spot.

The libero spot is the interesting one. With Kim Hae-ran gone (although I read somewhere that she might try to be back after giving birth), Lavarini said that he would leave that spot open and decide while watching the season. Oh Ji-young would be a safe if not obvious choice. Last year, Yim Myung-ok's performance was the best among her peers (her reception efficiency rate was 51,9%. INSANE). But can she repeat this performance and she'll be 35 at the Olympics...

OH: KYK, Lee Jae-young, Kang So-hwi, Lee So-young*

    MB: Yang Hyo-jin, Kim Su-ji, Han Song-yi*

OP: Kim Hee-jin (MB), Park Jeong-ah (OH)

    S: Lee Da-yeong, Yeum Hye-seon

    Li: Oh Ji-young*

Agreed about Jung Jiyoon. She certainly brought more aggressive and powerful attacking style as korean MB but still too inexperienced for national team and still weak in blocking which is crucial in international stage. I vote for Park Eunjin more than Lee Juah. She was quite impressive in 2019 World Cup imo but idk why she was excluded from Lavarini's Tokyo Qualification team in Thailand early this year.

Isn't it a bit gamble to put Jung Hoyoung who never play under Lavarini team to important tournament as Olympics? Well, it's still early so let's see..

I always wonder why Ahn Hyejin never gets called back to national team after Tokyo Qualification in Russia. I used to think she's one of setters Lavarini wants to nurture as backup for Lee Dayeong, but after health problem in Russia, she's basically forgotten.

  • Some interesting BTS footage of the AVC 2020 qualification finals between Korea and Thailand. It's been posted online only recently.

    Before the game:

So what's going on between KYK and Nootsara? In that first video around minute 2.25 they are acting like total strangers when previously they were friends..

I also read somewhere that they unfollowed each other on IG

    What happened? :(:(

  • OH-MY-FREAKING-GOD! I was thinking just yesterday how cool would be to be able to watch the replays of last VNL! You're a mind-reader! Amazing stuff! <3

  • thanks!

  • I'm assuming because she swears a lot. the Korean word 씨발/shibal, sounds similar to the word is 식"빵" 언니 bread. its more like playing with the word.

That's correct. She's known to use the swear word on court during heated moments and it's been caught on screen. Viewers took it casually and thought it was hilarious. It ended up becoming a personality theme - 식빵언니. She has a huge female fan base and that's what they call her (in the public as well).
