2024 Women’s Volleyball Nations League

  • I don’t think Kenya or Korea would qualify for it in this system.. But countries like Bulgaria, Belgium, Ukraine, Sweeden, Czech Rep, Argentina etc..

The only problem I see right now with this is how it’s gonna affect ranking system. Basically 19-20th ranked teams would automatically jump 2-3 spots up without playing VNL compared to like bottom 3-4 teams in VNL which would get destoryed and go 2W-10L and losing >30 points easily just by being in VNL.. and so on, every year those bottom teams would just rotate.

If there is no way for relegating teams to challenge best ranking teams outside of VNL, then I see a bit of a problem. I don’t like the idea of using world ranking to determinate who is gonna be there. Teams like Bulgaria or France could go 10 places down just for playing VNL compared to someone like Slovenia/Columbia who wouldn’t play.

Challenge cup should remain imo. It was quite fair given the fact the very federation had at least one spot in competition.

  • Abolishing the core team concept is a great news! Good bye to Korea finally🥳

The rest of the news is BS. I was already complaining that the number of teams should drop to 12, instead FIVB decided to increase the number to 18?:what: this creates a very unfair situation since not every team plays against each other, and lucky draw can make a huge difference for qualification to final 8 or not🤦 at least they should relegate 2 teams for making competition interesting for bottom 6 teams.

Abolishing challenge Cup is another stupid idea from fivb😒 it was a fair competition opportunity for lower level teams from different federation to play against each other. For non-vnl teams, this was the only possiblity to play against other federations except WCh. Also this was keeping European League more interesting since it was giving a slot for challenge Cup.

  • Well, I would like to have only 12 teams as you guys, but I understand that promoting volleyball in other countries is by playing with the top teams. I hope and I’m quite sure that there will be some common sense division that top teams will play the same amount of games with the weaker teams and so on. Good that amount of games per team was not increased and maybe we will have some surprises.

  • we will see good teams as argentina, czech republic or puerto rico

It only seems that african teams can get into vnl just easily

  • The TVA has announced a 25 player wide roster for international tournaments in 2024. There’s a mix of old and new faces, overseas based and domestic league players. Players will be selected from this list to participate in the 2024 VNL.

Experienced setter Sirima is missing from the roster... Pornpun and Natthanicha or Donphon are expected to be the main setters for VNL. Japan based Thatdao and Hattaya are expected to be the main MBs with Jarasporn and Waruni the reserves, and new coach Natthaphon is expected to stick with his experienced attackers in key OH and OP positions. However, expect 17 yo Warisara to join them... she’s the top scorer in the Thai league (in the first phase). Another OH to watch is 19 yo Siriwan from Supreme Chonburi.

  • Yes they are correct. :)

Can't believe Jeong Ah is still playing... she wasn't that good in the club either 😭

Should have been Hanbi or even Eunso if they want to train a new gen.

  • Zhu Ting announced in her “Weibo” (The Chinese social media) account that she will return to the NT during VNL to help China qualify for Paris.

Here’s the translation (by google) of her statement,

Today, April 8, 2024, I officially confirmed with the Chinese Volleyball Association that I will return to the national team during the World Women's Volleyball League.

My only purpose in returning to the team this time is to contribute to the Chinese women's volleyball team's qualification for the Paris Olympics. To this end, I will go all out and concentrate on training and competition. In order to avoid all interference and misunderstandings, I will not participate in any commercial activities during the national team and will not accept any commercial endorsement cooperation.

From the end of last year to the Spring Festival this year, my body was in a period of fatigue, my competitive state seriously declined, and I couldn't even cope with daily games. In addition, the various rumors and deliberate attacks on me on the Internet since the Tokyo Olympics have never stopped, and even affected my family. I once lost interest in volleyball and hoped to stay away from the right and wrong. So I applied for retirement to the Henan Provincial Sports Bureau. Knowing that I had the intention to retire, leaders at all levels of the Henan Sports Bureau and the State General Administration of Sports and the national team were very concerned and contacted me many times to communicate, enlighten and encourage me. In the past two years, my mentor Lang has repeatedly encouraged me to return to the national team and continue to fight for the country. When I was at my lowest point, she helped me analyze the problems in my body and technology many times and urged me to strengthen physical training. Driven by various forces, I gave up the idea of retiring, strengthened physical training, and improved my athletic performance. The improvement in my condition gave me confidence, and I gradually came out of the trough. Now I feel that I am physically and mentally ready, so today I officially confirmed my return to the national team and will fight for the country again. Here, I would like to express my gratitude to those who have been caring, encouraging and helping me during this period.

Next, I will try my best to play the last few games of this season's Serie A, and then recover my physical fitness, keep up with the rhythm of the national team as soon as possible, devote myself to training and competition, and work with the team to make every effort to help the Chinese women's volleyball team qualify for the Paris Olympics.”

It’s now clearer why Zhu looked struggling this season before the playoffs. But it still shocked me that she even applied for retirement. I hope Zhu can continue her recent good form, and more importantly, to have really found her interest in volleyball back. It’d be a big loss to the volleyball world if such a star retired so early.

  • She is such a unique player that I won't be surprised if she rise from her ashes like KYK did in Tokyo and bring a medal to china. With her return, china become a big contender for the gold! What do you guys think?

Well imo china is still behind serbia, turkey, usa, italy and coping with brazil

They had quite good attack, zhu and yyl is good and if yuan keep level of last year it gonna be hard but gong and wyy are ok but not aiming for big as setter and libero

    Passing gonna be bad too

Imo China will be one of the medal contenders with Zhu’s return. They have chance for the gold if luck is on their side, but I wouldn’t say they’d become a big contender for the gold medal.
They still have significant weaknesses. Setter is obviously the weakest link. Diao had some good games but her low could be really low. I’m not convinced by the current Ding Xia even as a back up, it’s just a shame that Yao Di previously said that her chapter with the NT was ended (Chinese fans said it’s due to her beef with Cai Bin):gone:

Blocking and attacks on the right side are the other major issues. None of their MBs is good blocker, even though all of them are really tall. Gong is an all-arounder but her attacks have always been on and off. And of course, their biggest flaw is still the coach:whistle: Passing might be an issue but I think it’ll be fine. Their libero showed she is one of the best rn, Gong is also a good passer that can also help relieve the reception pressure of Zhu & LYY.

The OG will be a short tournament under the new format. If China is lucky to have all their players playing at their best in that few decisive matches, they will have the chance for gold. But that’s a big IF.

To me they are the medal contenders with Italy, turkey and serbia. Depending on the draw of course, but I think these four would be in the semis.

Today's volleyball requires to have one of the big opposites in order to be successful. And if you don't have one of those opposites, then you should have two very strong outside hitters (that's why I don't consider Brazil as a medal contenders because they don't have a strong opp but also only have one strong OH)

China, with return of Zhu, might have the strongest oh duo in the world. Both of the players have the potential to score 20+ points every game. They are not the best receivers in the world and can't cover someone else but I think they are decent and don't need someone to cover them at reception. And gong can always step in whenever they need. She is not a very scorer opp but she has good defense and reception skills.

I agree that their biggest struggles will be setters and coach

  • Gabi and Ana Cristina seems a pretty good duo of OH imo.

  • This is the first Olympic in years that imo anything can happen. On paper there is no clear favorite. Too bad the system (2 pools of 6)has changed.

That's what they said in Tokyo too, and in the end Rosamaria and Drews were the opposites playing the final, not Boskovic and Egonu.

If Gabi and Ana Cristina are both at their best, they can carry the offensive load. Kisy has also grown a lot this season.

Brazil may have had a weak NT season last year, but we had a lot of injuries and many of our players weren't in the best physical condition (Carol, Gabi, Rosamaria and Macris notably). Before 2023, we played 5 finals in a row, and those were all before Ana Cristina's rise and Thaisa's comeback, so I wouldn't count us out of medal contention.

Since 1992, Brazil has made the semi-finals in every Olympics except for Rio. Turkey and Italy, on the other hand, have never medalled. Both sides are unquestionably strong teams with very good players, but they still need to prove themselves at the biggest stage.
